What's a good QUIET tire to replace Continental ContiPro Contact, size 225R45/17 ?

And a good SNOW tire ?

TIA,
Richard

Quiet tire: Try the Pirelli P7 Cintauro All-season

snow tire, if you drop down to 15" wheels with 195/65r15, you have a lot of choices of good snow tires at decent prices: General ALtimax Arctic, Bridgestone Blizzak WS80, Michelin Xice XI3, Continental ExtremeWinterContact, various Nokian tires, etc

He's saying wheels, so perhaps a second set of 15" wheels...

Discount Tire just warranted a set of the P7 +'s for me.
After 3k & 3 balances they swapped them out. They were noisy in my JSW also. I went back to Michelin Defenders. Might of been a bad set .
But I got 1.6 mpg more on the same road with the Defender VS the Pirellis
driving the same roads & driving the same way: aggressive.

I have the General Arctic's in 16"on another set of wheels awesome tire , like an All Terrain

I scanned a Consumer Reports article that said that the Pirelli P4/P7, Continental Pure Contacts and the Michelin Premier A/S are in a three-way tie.

I got the Continental Pure Contacts on the advice of my local tire gurus. I'm very happy with them. Time will tell if they will last 100,000 to 130,000 miles. The OEM said Bridgestone Turanza EL 400's lasted 90,000 miles with 10,000 miles rotations. I did skip a few rotations. The local tire girl recommended 5,000 mile rotations .

My Jetta came with Continentals and they lasted 30,000km when one had a sidewall failure, and they would not honour the warrantee on them, so won't touch Continentals on principal.

For winter's I love my Yokohama iceGuard tires, great grip and not loud. Another great winter tire to look at is the Nokian Hakkapeliitta tires.

For summer tires I like my Falken's have them both on my Jetta and my BMW. Great grip and quiet.

I'm failing to understand going from a 17" tire Ø to a 15" tire Ø, to fit snow tires ?
What he is saying that there are just a lot more choices in size and price (cheaper) with a a 15 inch tire.

A 17 inch might look kinda cool in a boy racer kind of way, but other than that, a 17 has zero performance benefit over a 15 or 16 inch tire.

My pal got the exact same brand/model all season tire as me except his was a 17 and mine was a 16 and mine were cheaper.

If you are going to run a separate set of winter tires, buy some steel wheels in 15 or 16 and save some money on the tires and having to mount and balance your tires every winter and spring when you change between summer and winter tires.

Boy racer, @ 70 y.o. dem' days are long gone… ;)

1) Are rims in 5X112 available for 15" tires ?

2) I checked and except for tread width (obviously) the 195R65/15 won't upset the electronics (ABS, Speedo, etc.) on the 2012 JSW. :D

Thanks for the comments.

1) yes.

2) JSW's have 312mm front brakes, 15" won't clear the caliper.

Thanks, for all the comments and suggestions.

I see 15 won't fit (clearance issues), the 16"<17" tires, as regards $$$, the OEM (or steel) 16" wheels were "more costly" than four (4) OEM aluminum wheels I found at $125 w/ all the lugbolts and two "keys."

IF the factory selects a 225/45R17 as "standard" as regards overall performance… why not follow their recommendation… given tire replacement has got to be "the cheapest (per/mile) part" on the car ?

I'm in the market for new tires and the Pirelli P7 Cintauro All-season seems to have poor quality control from the reviews on Tire Rack. Either they love the tire or they think it's absolute junk. There are many reports of tires losing balance and/or going out of round, as well as many complaints of flats. I'd like a summer or all season grand touring tire with low rolling resistance and decently responsive (doesn't feel like a wet noodle during some spirited driving) and there aren't too many other options. The only other contender seems to be the Bridgestone RE97AS.

I have a set of 16" Tire Rack steelies with 205/55/16 Dunlop WinterMaxx tires and they completely destroyed the crisp handling, making it feel more like a Buick Lesabre. They handled the snow great, but wet grip and dry response were pretty lousy. I'm installing Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3's in 205/50/17 on my stock TDI wheels this winter.

FYI - I have 15in after-market alloy wheels with Winter tires on my 2012 TDI Jetta.

No clearance issues.

Tire dealer looked up wheel specs to ensure the ones ordered would fit properly.

I kept the 15" steel wheels with 195/65R15's from our '99 Passat, and they fit on a '13 Jetta sedan that came with 16" wheels. My understanding and experience with snow tires is that if you can fit a smaller diameter wheel with a narrower tire for snow use you're better off traction wise and money wise. A set of good 195/65R15's sure worked well on the Passat as well as the '13 Jetta, and they're the same rolling radius/diameter as the OE 205/55R16's or the OE/optional 17's. The 15's are less expensive to buy, and if you run out of traction with them in snow or ice either I drive way to slow or you drive way too fast in those conditions.

As has been pointed out with a separate set of wheels with mounted snow tires you don't have the expense of removing the "summer" tires every fall to have the snow tires mounted, and vice versa in the spring. You'd still have to store the dismounted tires, and haul them back and forth to a tire shop to have them remounted and balanced. Swapping the wheels with mounted tires isn't that big a job, and wastes a perfectly good couple of hours as well.:D

another reason to go with a small winter wheel is you will have more sidewall in the even you encounter a pothole. CraigsList is a good source for OEM wheels. New steel wheels fro my 2015 ran me $60 ea at Tirerack.com after I bout them I found a post on CL for EOM aluminum with snow tires for $450. Date code on the tires were 2514. He only had them for one winter.

Yeah, I picked up up a set of OEM Passat 15" wheels for $80, total. One had a bunch of curb rash but it's just cosmetic.
