Hello all,

I recently purchased a 2012 touareg tdi with the CATA engine. Intake bank 1 reached up to 10 degrees and rattles like crazy on startup. It's definitely time for a new timing chain. I know the best way to remove the engine is to drop it out through the bottom, however, I do not have access to a lift. I would like to just pull the whole front end apart like I did with my MK5 jetta tdi and pull it straight out through the front with my cherry picker. I'm hoping to get some advise or tips from anyone that has replaced the timing chains or pulled the engine on one of these cars. If anyone has any suggestions on what seals I should replace while it is out I would greatly appreciate the information! Would be happy to take some pictures and do a writeup after if one is requested.

Thanks for reading!

There are just too many to list....
You will want to figure out a way to drop it out the bottom.

I just did all this and then some on a CNRB. It was a huge job.

There's a whole thread on Club Touareg about timing chain replacement, full of great pictures and commentary.

I'm sure you could lower the subframe and pull the engine/trans/transfer case out the front once the entire front end was off. But it would be a job.

That's how I do the longitudinal Audis:

But the Toureg is very different, and they come out the bottom pretty easy although you would certainly need a lift:

Very interesting, maybe I'll have to do some research on those audis and see if I can gain any insight. Do you have any recommendations on what seals to replace while it's out? I've got an idea, but would love some insight. Thank you for the pictures they are very helpful!

The CNRB I just had out, and resealed, had a service receipt four pages long... mostly due to all the seals and gaskets and such. I probably spent a solid two hours in total pouring over ETKA and writing down part numbers. I suspect the CATA will be similar. The job out the door was just shy of $9300, but that did include a new windshield and cowl trim.

I made a thread about it:

That was definitely quite the job! Since I'm pulling the engine I'm going to go through and reseal a lot of the same things. I'm guessing ETKA access is only for shops? I've just been using Volkswagen parts online diagrams and I hope I've gotten most of everything.
