I have a 2005 jetta with a bew timing belt snapped got head redone with new valves and springs and lifter and a new cam checked the crank and turned it over with the head off but now i can’t get the crank to tdc it’s hitting the valves no matter how much i turn the cam the crank won’t go more than half a turn

🤦

I guess you could loosen all the cam cap holders to allow the camshaft to elevate, which will close all the valves. Then you can turn the crank wherever you want. Put the cam at tdc (this is also required), and tighten it back down. You will probably need all new bolts for that. And then reinstall the belt.

Find some youtube vids for doing the timing belt, rewatch them 5-10 times, and see how it goes.

(**WITH BELT REMOVED**) If you turn the crank bolt BACK 90° from TDC, all four pistons are midway through their travel stroke - sitting midway in the cylinder bore.
With them positioned there, you can turn the camshaft however, wherever to get it pinned at its timing position. THEN slowly, gradually, move the crank bolt FORWARD to TDC - should get there without contact. Lock it in place. Then proceed with timing belt reinstall.

yeah did all that took the cam about all the way out and youtube videos for the timing belt won’t help because the timing it locked before hand the valves are still hitting both are at tdc bothe cylinder #1 lobes are up

BTW, skip what you might have seen on YT videos if they involved putting paint marks on the belt and counting teeth or whatever.

Basics of the right way to do it:
1. Lock cam and crank; loosen cam bolts
2. Install belt making sure the bolts on the cam sprocket as towards LH side of their groove.
3. Tighten tensioner - as you do so, the cam sprocket will rotate counter clockwise resulting in the sprocket's bolts "moving" toward the centre of their groove.
4. Tighten those bolts.
5. Rotate crank bolt two rotations (after removing locks), then reinsert the locks and check position of tensioner alignment tab. If that moved or you can't get the locks in, re-do the previous two steps until things align.
