Can you describe the cirmcumstances that you suspect lead to leaving carbon buildup grime on top of the pistons?
I have buildup on my egr and most likely the Intake manifold.
I plan to replace both with clean PD130s but afraid might disturb the build up after Intake manifold and accidentaly push it to the combustion chamber/piston tops.
These being in tight quarters combined with poor visibilty and poor acccess might be a problem doing this properly.
I havent been in there but this is whats keeping me from doing my EGR/Intake cleaning.

The Saga continues:
So last Saturday she took off on a 12 hour road trip. She got 8 hours in, pulled off for 30 minutes and when she started back up it ran for 2 minutes and died. She was not able to explain what happened very well. She said it felt "like something happened" and that the "powersteering quit working". She proceeded by bus to her destination and got car towed to a local mechanic. I talked with him just today. He tried to start it Sunday morning and it wouldn't start. He tried again Monday and it started with a "puff of blue smoke". He took it for a road trip today and felt that it was starting to miss and so asked me about the timing.

I checked and re-checked with the mark on the flywheel that I think it is...and used my VCDS to check injection pump timing. All was well.

Would the flywheel being out by a tooth either way, with injection timing right in the middle of the range, allow it to run but poorly?

I thought maybe one of the return lines on the injectors was letting air in (I had to replace one that was leaking but didn't check the others...and replaced it with plastic hose as a temporary fix) or air at fuel filter (outlet side was loose at nipple connection to filter housing...where its welded).

I suggested he change the fuel filter, replace the return lines, and check the timing.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Only a poorly running car will have this issue. This car has other problems, bent rod, bad injector etc.

A tooth either direction would not hurt anything. I think there is a pump issue.

Turns out it was a fuel issue. Mechanic in Merritt changed the fuel filter and it was half filled with water (seems odd). Has run fine sense. Random....
