Yes, delayed expense. Doing it twice and paying for damage when it fails prematurely.

There are just too many to list....
Cheap and Volkswagen don't make good bedfellows.

I assume this is on your '98 Beetle? There really isn't much shortcutting to be done here. If you are mechanically inclined, can follow directions, and purchase the necessary tools, you can do it yourself and all you'll need is the parts.

You'll find the parts kit prices won't vary much, maybe $30 or so from the least to most expensive, so long as you are comparing equal, quality, complete kits. If you find something much cheaper, it will be incomplete, Chinese junk, or both.

timing belt and budget should never be used in same sentence. As above stated, do the job your self or take it to a shop. but cheaping out will cost you potentially thousands short or long term. not worth it. some things you can skimp on. the timing belt is not one of them.

Cheapest place is Rothenbacher Engineering [SIC] or Prothe.
For parts that will fail and destroy the engine in short order, yes.

Rent the proper tools and buy a complete kit from one of the well-known quality vendors. Don't shortcut the job or mark & pray it. It's not hard to DIY correctly.

Everybody is saying it, but I'll jump on the wagon anyway. The cheapest way is to buy genuine replacement parts from a place like IDParts or Dieselgeek. While you are there buy the proper tools as well. Oh, you will also need VCDS to get everything working properly after the mechanical work is done. Don't cut corners on this, replace what needs to be replaced.

Buy the parts at a quality shop as mentioned above and get a TDI'er to do it at one of the GTGs. Plan on a 4-5hr job and make sure you pay him well....if he knows what he's doing.

As others mentioned, if it's not done right, it reeeeally gets expensive when your motor gets trashed.
