now days, if the car is in decent shape, $8k for that car is not such a bad price. As per the book 125k for timing belt job is required, every 40k is DSG flush ( if automatic)

dealership said $1700-2000 for timing/Wpump work......$450 trans flush I've read where flushing is a risk, change filter and add approx 8qts for the truck ? is OEM parts the only way to go ? big price differences between aftermarket mfg's

Everyone talks about distance on these belts, but the year limit on the lifetime is important too, right? I know they dry out and crack in Tucson.

He has a good point, there is shelf life for the rubber of the timing belt, I believe is like 5 year after being manufactured, check with the manufacturer. As per the TB job, try to steer away from the Stealership, an Independant mechanic should charge you half of whtat the stealership will.

If the car is an automatic the transmission requires a fluid and filter service every 40K miles. The clutches for the DSG are in the transmission, so when they shed material it contaminates the fluid. That's why the change interval. If you don't see any evidence of a change in the past it's way overdue, and I'd have it done right away. But the transmission is probably OK.

I like Gates because it's OE on most of these cars, but Conti or Dayco is fine, too. I usually use Geba water pumps, but Hepu and Graf are also good.

did u buy the parts individually ?

Search your car and get the timing belt kit. It will have everything you need so you don't have to search for individual things. I use ID parts for most things I buy new. I have never had a problem and would recomend them.

Regarding the water pump: is the impeller made of composite or metal? Is there an advantage of one over the other? Does Hepu have any additional features to make it cost $130 more? And lastly do all the bolts and studs all need to be replaced if they look okay?

The Geba water pump has a metal impeller. I believe the Hepu has a composite impeller. The Hepu pump has the same variable mechanism as the OE pump, the Geba does not. The variable mechanism is there to speed warm up times to help meet emissions standards. Not having it throws no codes and will not affect how the car operates.

And yes, the bolts that are included in our kit should be replaced. Most of them (especially the engine mount bolts) are single use, and can break if re-used.
