I have ~40k miles on a 2012 Golf MK6 Manual TDI. The serpentine belt failed on me this morning going down the interstate to work. All lights came on like a Christmas tree and lost power steering. Got to work and popped the hood and saw the belt ruminants.

So I plan on ordering a timing belt kit from DieselGeek, and the tool, my question is should I have the timing belt replaced now? If so that will be a shop job, or just replace the serpentine belt and keep on going. Obviously I would inspect the timing belt the best I can, but IDK that I can time wise tackle the belt nor have I ever done it before.

Timing belt interval is I believe 130K miles or 10 years, so replace the timing belt now in my opinion. If you are mechanically capable of doing the job it is not too hard, if not, take it to a professional.

Find the date the car went into service.

My guess would be some time in 2011. That makes the belt 10 years old. They are more prone to break due to age than mileage.

If it breaks, you will be rebuilding the cylinder head in addition to replacing the belt.

My opininion would be to not risk disaster and change the timing belt using quality parts and the correct procedure.

Its a good time to do a CP3 upgrade when you have the timing belt off...

There's also a guard you can get to protect the timing belt if the serpentine belt explodes.

Finally, you can install a fluid dampr pulley while you're in there.

6 years is max what all T/Balt manufacturing recommend . So you are 3 years over. If is my car I would do it ASAP.
