got the vag com hooked up and it says 4.7 btdc.

I can't figure out how to adjust it.

Remove the timing belt inspection cover and locate the three 13mm bolts on the camshaft gear.

with the timing advance, you want to retard it.

loosen the three 13mm bolts and with either a 17mm open end wrench, bump the camshaft in a counter clockwise rotation just barely.

remember that you are moving the camshaft, not the gear that runs the belt.

after each bump in the timing, retorque the bolts to something like 23 ft.lbs. and re check with vcds.

small changes here account for large changes in timing.

you are right. I was. thinking that timing was the value I should look at.

am at 5.4 now. is that bad?
the range seems to be 2 something, but it runs.

5.4 seems pretty advanced. After i did my cam and timing belt I was at -2.5 and set it to +1.0. Runs really good there so far. As franko6 has shared, there is some trial and error necessary, as every car seems to like a different value. So, maybe start closer to zero and see how it runs and mpgs, then if not satisfied move .5, and repeat until happy?

Retarding the cam to -2.5 will yield better economy but performance will lack. Advancing the cam to 2.5 will yield better performance but economy will suffer.

Pick your poison.

well it took a few tries but it sitting at 1.0 now. runs about like I remember. wish I had checked the right value before I did it.
oh well.
btw it goes to 7.4 if you go the wrong way and at 0 it won't stay running.

Thanks for steering me in the right direction.
I misunderstood the adjustments. thought the vag com could tweek it, I see now it was just to read it.

There is the 0.0 which is "perfect timing" and then there is the 0.0 when the sensor is out of range. Your 0.0 was the out of range one.
