Simple question, does anybody know of a time limit to sign up for the goodwill package? I would like to hold off on doing anything. I hope it just fades away and they don't do anything.

$500 for VW would most likely go to a paddle-shift steering wheel.
Personally I'm waiting to see whether my car will be recalled or a buyback. Why would I want to spend $500 at VW on parts/service on the car if I won't be keeping it.

Not signing up isn't going to make this fade away into the abyss. The only thing that is going to happen is you're going to miss out on $1,000. The goodwill package is no-strings-attached. Signing up for it does not obligate you to anything in the future. You could accept the package and still ignore the recall if that's what you want to do.

Ignoring the recall is exactly what I was thinking, if that's an option. Thanks for your responses, I see I have until April so I guess I will get it done by then. I'm not being a conspiracy theorist, just not rushing into it.

Goodwill package

My attorney said NOT to take the package. There is one sentence that set her off! Something about not being able to collect later, IF I understood her correctly!

Please clarify. Several other members have had attorneys review the information and give the program a green light.

I read the fine print. IMHO (I am not an attorney, but I fancy I understood it), it creates no obligation on my part, nor do I "sign anything away" by taking the goodwill offer. This issue was covered extensively in this forum last Fall when the goodwill program was announced. Not taking the goodwill offer is flushing $1K down the porcelain birdbath.

Looking at my Goodwill packet, I do see an April 2916 REGISTRATION deadline. And I noted the 3-year towing and roadside assistance.

Given the mountainous verbiage (plus I am one lazy sailor): Will the card(s) expire one year after REGISTRATION?

Upon re-exam, the dealer only card expires 11/16 (printed on card front).

My registration date was 12/09/2015 (Teutonic efficient even noted the hour/minute/seconds EST...................)

ez sends (Hoping Ken Feinberg and VW do the right things for owners - whatever that is)

Just sign up! It take 5 minutes.
You get 500 bucks you can use anywhere and 500 bucks you can use at the dealer for parts, service, new car, etc...
Then there's the 3 years free roadside assistance.

There's no reason to wait. Sign up man

I think the year will run out before Dieselgate plays out.
I was saving my 4 cards to work on an upgrade if there was a buyout, but I think that VW is almost completely blown away and has no clue as to how to recover and stay solvent.

Seriously, she is (apparently) not competent counsel - you should have major reservations about relying on her advice.
The relevant fine print in the goodwill package essentially constitutes an agreement between you and the financial institution issuing the card - not between you and VAG.

I think when www.vwdieselinfo.com first went up, it has something like "by accepting the package you agree to future terms and conditions to be decided at a later date"

There is no such statement now, but does have "Affected customers eligible for the Goodwill Package are not required to waive their rights or release or arbitrate their claims against Volkswagen Group of America in order to receive the Package. "

But there is also concern how binding the cardholder agreement is:

That, to me, looks like a standard credit cardholder agreement. What do you find unusual about it?

Great - Amy Williams-Derry, another attorney whose advice I would avoid like the plague.
In the very first paragraph (the "definitions") of the cardholder agreement, it states that it is between you and Metabank, not VAG.

A reprint from the LA Times, quoting an attorney who wanted to get her name
in the LA Times, doesn't automatically make it credible.

I have no problem with the cardholder agreement, but I'm not an attorney.

[attorney] Williams-Derry cautioned that “the clause is worded extremely broadly, and the courts have history unfortunately of interpreting these clauses expansively.”

I don't think VW will use a goodwill package to bilk owners. I plan to take the package.

As long as you have no plans to sue Metabank then I think you'll be fine.

Williams-Derry was cautioning you about VAG, which is not pertinent to the legalese in question. Either she's incompetent, or she was willing to say anything to get her name in a major newspaper. Not all attorneys know what they're talking about btw - some of us have learned this the hard way.

... None :S
If I was going to sue VW, and VW decided to change their mind that taking the loyalty package was somehow binding, I'd think the statements I have recorded in audio, and in writing, and screen shots of the website saying otherwise wouldn't go well for them.
