VW Diesels to Meet U.S. Tier II Limits by Bob Brooks

"Volkswagen AG diesel-powered cars sold in the U.S. as of this May will achieve federal Tier II, bin 9 emission levels, says VW executive engineer Helmut Endres. The new lower emissions levels acieved by the 100 hp version of VW's 1.0L TDI 4-cyl turbodiesel will result from fuel injection pressure increased from the current 27,500 psi (1,900 bar) to 29,700 psi (2,050 bar), reducing particulate emissions and, by use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation, cutting oxides of nitrogen (NOx))...."

The article goes on from there, but since I could not insert the scanned gif file here, and it is too long to type, I'm just giving a head's up. Perhaps someone else can create a URL containing the whole article so it can be posted to Fred's site.

That is what they were trying to reach, only the current ALH North American engines DO NOT have 1,900 bar injection, it is less than 1/2 that.

Even so, they will not be allowed to sell them in five states either:

Last year (2002), 31,220 diesel- powered passenger cars were sold in the United States, up about 35% from 2001 but still representing just one of every 250 sales.

However, every single one of them were Volkswagen TDIs.

Volkswagen now says it won't offer diesels in California, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut or Vermont in the 2004 and '05 model years. And Mercedes-Benz will not be able to sell its diesel E-Class sedan in those five states either.

Hey SkyPup......Have you heard anything to the effect that Mercedes Benz may introduce the C-Class into North America with the CDI Engine? I know the E-Class is coming in 2004. A C-240 CDI with AWD would be awesome!
