Ive just bought a 2012 Passat TDI SEL with 77k miles on it. It has a loud ticking noise from 1800 - 2400 rpm ish when cold when it gets up to 180 temp it goes away and sounds great. Anyone have similar issues? Any help is much much appreciated. also as the title states anyone who has the problem fixing comment lol I’ll pay $100 thank you

Scan with VCDS to check for codes. A lot of times injector issues can cause noises/poor performance when cold, then sound/feel completely normal once up to operating temps.

Do I need any special cable to use this or pay for anything?
Yeh you buy the cable from rosstech then you get lifetime support on the software but there might be somebody around that has it. U&sed to be a vcds locator somewhere on here but haven't seen it recently.

Most likely youre hearing the injector(s). Was there any work done on the car before you bought it or anything you did? Again, best way to get any of us to help you whenever you have a problem is to scan the car and post any faults along with your question.

There are just too many to list....
It is called "nailing", and is in a diesel akin to detonation, or ironically, "dieseling" in a gasoline fueled car.

Quite common on the CKRA. A new set of injectors will fix it. However, I always try some injector cleaner added to the tank (like BG or Liquimoly) and a re-entering of the injector codes (you'll need a proper scan tool such as VCDS for that).

If and when you replace the injectors, make sure the copper seals on the bottom are out of the cylinder bore. Seen too many times injectors replaced and issues arise only to find that the old copper seal ring is still in the bore and the injector isnt seating right.

Is that the same as doing the adpation with the injectors?

Yeah. Adapting/coding/entering injector codes etc, is just entering the values into the ECM.

Try injector cleaning as a first step, this worked for me. 1/2 bottle is 2 consecutive tanks. Good luck, John

Tbh, if I was going after a diesel fuel system cleaner, I would probably try Liqui Moly. I know a couple of people use them and never had any issues.

I used BG245, meant to be good stuff and doesn't harm anything in a CR engine.

I did try LiquiMoly first and have used their cleaner in several vehicles. For my CKRA the when cold running tick under load remained. I was about to replace the injectors and thought I'd try another cleaner. Chevron worked for me and was less than $20; used it in two consecutive tanks. YMMV
