Those with exhaust upgrades come in

I redid my exhaust this weekend. I went 3" all the way back from the turbo. I get this annoying "whoosh" sound everytime I shift now. I like the turbo whistle at startup and when it spools up, but hearing the woosh sounds is terrible. Does everyone else have this sound that are not running the cat or muffler? Is there anything I can do to lesson this whoosh sound but keep the turbo whistle? The only think I can think of is to add a muffler again. If the muffler will cure the sound, what muffler do you all suggest I get?

Thanks

Jason

That sound is normal in a tdi with vnt-turbo and big exhaust. Just learn to live with it or change the car:D. The bigger the turbo and boost get the rougher the sound gets..

In not so much modified case wrong tune of hardware or software can also cause that.

When im into boost and shift i get a high pitched sound thats almost like a blowoff valve. However when im not putting much pressure out and not heavy into the throttle it makes this odd lower pitched growl which kind of concerns me.

thats compressor surge. get a boostvalve.
No it's not.

A boostvalve isn't going to do anything for surge... For spikes? Yup... Surge? Nope.

Surge happens when there is to much pressure at the manifold and it gets backed up into the turbo. This is from being the engine being in to low of a rpm and to high of a boost level (This even happens in stock cars)

To the OP, that is a normal sound. Either get used to it, or get a muffler.

i LOVE that sound! i love it even more when people tell me my 'bov' sounds sweet.. and then i tell them i don't have one.. the look on their face is wonderful. it's also useful for scaring off the ricer boys, since it sounds a lot meaner than the little 'sneeze' that their bov makes...lol.

I get a fairly loud howl if i shift after alot of boost. Sounds like a squad of cheerleaders or maybe a large crow stuck in the exhaust.

Maybe I'll slap a muffler on it. Do you know if the turbo whistle will go away if ai put a muffler on it?

If you still have your old cat, it will do the trick (pretty sure). Mine never howled until i lost the cat, even after i chopped the muffler.

Yeah, if you're going to put something back in, it might as well be the cat (to at least clean up the exhaust a little). It won't make that noise with just a cat on the exhaust.

I miss that noise :(

(I spent 4 months driving with my exhaust broken just after the cat. The mufflerectomy is so much quieter than that was and no more whoosh!)

I would get a cherry bomb glass pack or Aero muffler, and u'll still get a good tone.

Yeah, whoosh noise here too. Trying to figure out why no whoosh in 5th gear though. If you get a whoosh in 5th, does that mean you have to get a 6 speed?

Would a Milltek sports cat be a good replacement for the stock one?
I'd like a high airflow with no whistles or warbles from the turbo.
I'm sorry but I just think the straight pipes sound too ricey for me and remind me of a diesel dump valve.

this might be a little off topic, and forgive me if it is... but what is the PERFECT exhaust setup for a TDI?

2" / 2.5" / 3"?

Cat / No CAT

Backbox / Mufflerectomy?

Please help!!!

I have a 2005.5 PD TDI Jetta running RC stage 1+, I'm going to the muffler shop in a week or so to get the cat-back straight pipe done. Do I need to go 3''?

I LOVE the whooosh! :D makes people think you're in a petrol, then they read the "diesel inside" sticker on the fuel cap and tend to look very confused then. :)

Damn skippy, I use that sound to turn heads, you get the "WTH is in that thing?" look. Driving down town at night the turbo sound echos off the buildings.

so in order to get the "whoosh" sound of a BOV do I have to remove the cat?
My CC was removed first, but I did not get the spool down sound until the muffler came off. Or it was not loud enough to notice. The sound that mine makes can be heard a hell of a long way away depending on when you let the go peddle out.

I really need to take a vid or sound clip and post that. I just don't know if anyone's is this loud.
