Tossed the cable a while back, but the car has lasted and lasted and lasted. Is it worth the risk buying a "genuine" cable off ebay? Or should I just buy the cable from Rosstech for $199?

Time or money.
Ross tech will be there in a day or 2. It will be 230 bucks. If something goes wrong ross tech is there.

You could order a knock off from Amazon for 20. It will be there just as fast. Getting the software to work might not happen. I gave several hours then pulled the trigger on ross tech.

Used ebay who know what happens if it doesn't work? Sure you'll get your money back then you can go buy a new one. When I was looking last year I think I was seeing 125 to 175. So 50 to 100 bucks saved but have to wait several days for auction to end.

I'm not averse to using some off-brand stuff, but for a company that has invested so much time and effort into keeping the product current, AND is probably the most reasonably-priced brand-specific, full-featured diagnostic tool....I'm more than happy to pay Ross-Tech what they ask.
$200 for the cable *and* lifetime customer support - tough to do better than that.

I have a genuine HEX-CAN cable for sale in the classifieds if you're interested.

$200 for what vcds can provide is a no-brainer. sure you can get a $15 cable and use vcds-lite and do data logging (can't do adaptations or check pump timing). but almost nobody really understands how to interpret the data anyway, it boggles my mind why someone would just "toss" a vcds cable. if you bought a new one, it woudln't really have any more functionality for your mk4 anyway. it's not very big, i'm sure there are more things in the glovebox worse less that could have been tossed

I bought a Kii VCDS on here for $100. Already had an old laptop to plug it into.
KII has unlimited vins and does logs on an ALH just fine.
I don't know what the logs mean but I can do logs, ha.

take 'em ;) expand your mind and tdi experience. the difference between simply driving a tdi you think drives well enough and one running right.. is really the same as living without glasses back in teh 80s when you probably should have had some :p

Sadly out of production. i mostly just need it to report on things, like injection per cylinder, boost vs. rpm etc. Is there a "lite" version maybe?
