For one of the SportWagens. I don't think there is any more room in the Touareg than the SW and I just took a job where my commute will be 75 miles one way. Do you guys see any downfall here? Are the 2010-2011 SportWagens the way to go for replacing the Touareg in mileage and space. Don't need to tow anything since I also have a truck. Any advice or heads up would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Willm

I traded in a 2004 Touareg V8 on a 2010 Sportwagen TDI. Love it. Just as much storage room in back, laid out better. Less legroom in back seat and missing some creature comforts like leather and dual climate control. But worth it.

Double the mileage, easier to park, and the DSG tranny is awesome.

The downfall will be that you'll get hosed if you trade in the Touareg. Sell it outright and then buy the JSW.

A 2.0 4 cylinder vs. a V10.....I think that would be the way to go if mileage is your concern.

The time element alone is probably worth 5k to me. Do you think I'd make up more than that on private party sale?

Easily. Just use kbb.com or nada.com and subtract a good 10% from the trade-in prices they give you. Then compare the trade-in value for the "private party sale".

I traded in my 2004 F-150 SuperCrew Lariat for my sportwagen TDI and don't regret it at all. I really didn't need a truck. I'm enjoying the mpg's and the fact that the car handles great so it is fun to drive. I've taken a couple 1000+ mile road trips. 21k miles on it already. I've "saved" $2500 in fuel costs in one year vs driving my truck. 15mpg vs 40mpg adds up quick at 21k miles/year.

Full disclosure: Not sure if you've read about the high pressure fuel pump drama. There is a sticky at the top of this forum. Its being blown way out of proportion but just so you can make an informed decision before you buy. I'd buy mine again.

Good information guys. Looks like if I sold it private party I would get about 6k more than if I traded it. Might be worth the hassle. I'll kick it around some.

When I traded in an old car on my 2010 Golf, the dealership emailed me an offer for 120% kbb value for a trade. That worked out pretty well. You never know til you try.

Its going in for service next wed so I think I'll ask them anyway. I hate fooling around with selling a car. Have done it many times on autotrader but its no fun.

On the trade vs a private sale: take a look at your state's sales tax laws regarding this.

Some states will deduct the value of the trade in from the price of the new vehicle, and use that number to determine sales tax on the new vehicle. Those are states in which often time it is better to trade in rather than sell outright.

Other states use the price of the new vehicle, regardless of what was traded in (if anything) when determining sales tax. In those states, it can be more worthwhile to do a private sale since you're not getting a sales tax reduction through trading in.

Just some food for thought.

In Mass, if you trade a vehicle in for another, you get credit on the new sale from the "old" car, but you don't get any excess back.

Let's say I own the '06 V10 and I trade it for a JSW that's $25,000. 6.25% of 25k is $1500.

I don't know how much the OP paid for his Touareg. I remember seeing price tags of $65,000. Here in Mass we pay 6.25% sales tax. 6.25% of $65k is $4,000+.

So in my case, I'd lose $2,500 on sales tax plus whatever grease-job the dealer gives me for a trade-in. It still doesn't make sense.

Willm, ultimately it's up to you whether you trade or sell the Touareg. I still think selling it the way to go. When you go in for the service next week, don't tell the dealer your plans but see what they'll give you for it. Are there any "specialty" dealers in your area? I know of two places in my area that only deal with higher end and sports cars. Some place like that might make you a better deal.

They are absolutely a high end dealer. It is an Audi, MB, Porsche, VW dealership. I'll ask them what they would give me for it. Couple of months ago they called me and asked if I was interested in selling. At the time I didn't need to sell it so I declined. I would be happy to sell it private party if I had the time. Time is the issue..

Man if the toureg is a v10 TDI, I am not sure how I would go. The commute is a bish for MPG but the Toureg can pull a Boeing 757, I know you will never use it for that but I want a truck that can tow a large airplane. If you own a Boat or camper, or even ATVs, keep the Toureg. If not sell it on craigslist and buy the Wagon.

When I bought my Dodge pickup I found a private buyer for my previous vehicle, a Camaro. I worked a deal through the dealer so that I'd be trading it in for a specific amount and the guy would be buying it for the same amount, so I got the tax break and more for the car than an actual trade in. Just make it a condition of sale.

So DSG if I buy the wagon? Sounds like it is awesome. We have an 03 Jetta Wagon and I love it. Going to keep it for a while longer.

I personally would never buy a DSG since I don't want to have to service it every 40k miles. Plus, VW has never been very good at making auto-shifting transmissions.

I have a DSG and it is fine.

But... it has to be serviced every 40 k (maybe $175 parts if I do it myself). It is very expensive or impossible to repair, and it seems that at least a small percentage of them are problematic.

So I would buy the manual, unless there are specific reasons you need an "automatic" transmission.

Think of the DSG as a manual transmission that is automatically shifted and you will be closer to the mark. Give it a third of a second to shift into first between taking your foot off the brake and hitting the throttle.

I needed an "auto" transmission, so I bought the DSG on the 2010.

Sell it here!!!! I guarantee there is a member looking at that exact car. Split the difference and give a member a deal. You will be happy and it would be quick.

Good luck either way.

I'm just tired of shifting gears and want an automatic. I got the Jetta in manual for the mpg's and the ability to mod. I already have a very expensive vehicle to repair though I haven't had to get much done. Made vw change lots of stuff out before my warranty was up. Has new propshaft, front right axle, Nav unit (dodged a big bullet there) and a couple other small items. If it cost me an extra $5-600 every 40k to service the DSG I can live with that. I need to go drive one sometime soon and see if it will work for us. If so I may put the Touareg up for sale on this site and will cut a deal between what vw would pay and private party.
