I forget the size socket needed for the filter, 24mm? i had to source one of them.

Combined with a random ebay fill tool with bottle adapter for around $30 they've held up well for 3 changes, about to do 2 more this fall as the miles pile on. 74K on the Passat and 72K on the Alltrack.
