After a few years of Passat TDI excitement, I'm wondering how you would rate your level of satisfaction overall. For me personally, I couldn't be happier; no real issues at all; great dealership, etc. I do live in fear that something horrible is going to happen eventually though. 23,000 km so far, so she's still a baby. Let's here it folks...how happy are you?

Well, overall I'm quite happy with my Passat. I love the way it drives, especially on the freeway. It's a level above and beyond what my Jetta TDI was. I did have a major issue with the turbo blowing a few thousand miles ago. The dealers here have no clue about the TDI but with the help of dieseldorf, MoGolf, Harv, and others the dealer finally covered the repairs under warranty and the car is as she was. Also had an episode with a sofa on the freeway but after some back and forth with the body shop, the car is back to the mint condition it was prior to the accident. The hesitation flash worked for me and I do worry about things like the water pump dying early like Tomo's, but I am happy with the car so far. 37k miles on it as of today...

Very happy overall. Haven't had any issues at all, knock on wood, since buying the car on 3/11/05. Have 38,250 miles. Car is driven 175 mi/week to and from work about 2/3 of which is highway. Made several road trips to Indianapolis, NY and northeast, Columbus, GA...GREAT road car! Get about 38-39 mpg @ 75-80 with A/C on, about 40-41 with it off. Only questionable item is driver's side window which, if left partially open to cool the vehicle when parked, when raised by the "one touch" feature will go up and immediately come down??! Wait a while, shut down & restart, or just hold the switch til it's all the way up solves the problem. I'm watching for the water pump, a la Tomo and others, but so far so good. While some do have a W/P failure prematurely, how many out there have had no problem right up to TB change? What are the odds....?
Thanks to all the great folks on this website..Jason, DD, DBW, Oilhammer, just to name a few, and all the others too many to list/name for all the terrific info about these vehicles and TDIs in general. Owning a TDI isn't just "owning a car"...it's a way of life!;)

I've had a few expensive issues with mine. It's running great at the moment though...just about to turn over 80K miles. I had thought about trading it, but I determined that there is no other car that I would like as well for my purposes...so it's a keeper.

I went as far as to test drive some alternatives, and when I got back in my car with its 1BE suspension, I realized that I'd be crazy to downgrade to anything else.

My only complaint is the tptronic. No Problems with it, I just wish I had a manual or DSG. Yeah, I know they were not available.

I voted good.

While I'm happy with the car, I wish it had an availiable manual transmission. I've tried the DSG in the Audi A3 and have no desire to have that transmission, but a traditional manual would be nice.

I think I'll be selling it when the common rail jetta sport-wagon becomes availiable.

The VW dealerships are also a sore point with me. If not for the good VW product, I would never put up with the dealership nonsense.

very good

I've voted 'very good', (TDI 2004.5) and with no real problems so far, 56,000 miles, hesitation flash done, tinted windows and I've been running 507 elf oil since 40,000. Just installed westfalia hitch. Runnning Green Diamond winter tires in season.

Plan to change both TB and auto trans fluid between 75-80,000.

Knock on wood my car has been very very good. Good fuel economy. Its been fairly trouble free, sans a brake light switch and one check engine light due to a sunflower seed clogged in take (do a search I have it fully documented) and of course 1 dang deer when the car had a mere 2800 miles on the clock...

Just turned 90,000 miles on my '05 and so far nothing but scheduled maintenance. I am still on the OE Michelin tires and original brake pads. The only thing I've had to replace that was not scheduled was wiper blades. Never been back to the dealership since the purchase and could not be happier with this car.

I plan on replacing the tires at 100k with the timing belt. 3 to 4/32 of tread left, so I think I can make it. 90% interstate driving about 700 miles per week (or about 1 tank of fuel).

I really like Passats in general. That is why I bought another one (the TDI).
That being said, I think that my 2000 1.8T was a little better built and had better material quality overall. The TDI has great torque, even stock, and it handles better than the 2000. I am still WAY OVER the way mine shifts though. 2nd gear and the 2nd to 3rd shift are not good even after a new tranny on VW's dime. That tells me that it has to be the chip or a sensor issue which I thought it was to begin with. They don't seem to care - no codes , no problem... So for this I gave it an average rating. No better than follow-up than the Fords I drove in the past-

I like the fuel mileage but mine has had some problems. Last owner busted an injector and had a new engine put in. I have had 2 glow plugs replaced and it is now in the driveway as I cannot fined a alternator and pulley for it. Dealer wants $700+ and that is to rich for me.

Overall I really really like our Passat wagon. Fuel mileage has more than lived up to my expectations, performance and handling is very enjoyable. I really like driving it, and errands in town are fun now. We can take trips without fuel killing us. My wife now looks at me and says, “don’t’ even think about selling my car!”

I could see someone who is not into working on cars being really disappointed. I can handle and deal with it. More disappointed in VW and how they are going about things than the car. Issues can crop up, but VWs attitude is bad, and no follow up to work it out with the customer to see what it would take to resolved.

Downside is the nagging issues. PCV valve and manifold crud. Smoking issue has only be resolved by additive (I am ok with the additive, but I think the DOC is messed up, but they won’t look at it without smoking, and it won’t smoke when its there).

The latest sensor issue is annoying. They said they had codes for the N75 valve, but while the code is gone (it went way by itself), it went into limp mode again.

The engine is going fine, trany and all the equipment works just fine. So, I am not even close to being at wits end or anything, but not happy either.

Dealer is fine, but they seem to be on a choke chin with VW. They cannot look at anything VW does not approve. VW won’t approve anything past the very end of their nose.

The only thing they will have going for them is that the Japanese do not build handling into their every day cars, they are good econo boxes. They will do the rest better, and VW is going to suffer badly, most people just need transportation.

The only problem I keep having is that I have to put fuel in the car every about every 600 miles.

The car has

been fine except for a few problems...AC relay was probably the worst...I am going to get the vibrating headlight fixed at the next oil change.

A new one has cropped up recently, but I believe it is minor...the moonroof and sunshade disappear completely when the car has sat out in the heat and sun, then, the auto protect feature prevents the roof from fully closing...backs the roof off when it gets to about 1 inch from being seated/closed.

No issues thus far. So far, I am very satisfied with my Passat. My only regret is not buying the wagon.

This is a great handling car and very good on the road. I have a 2006 Jetta that gets 20% better mileage than the Passat so I am spoiled by the Jetta.

Very happy

Love the wagon. 40,000 miles and have not had to take it back to the dealer. I bought the extended warranty so that pretty much guarantees that it will run run flawless until 100,001 miles. Aw well that is still worth $1600.
My only complaint is the ground clearance. My god I think i scrapped a dead cat the other day. Seriously it is way to low to the ground. I bottom out on the front end way to often going into parking lots. And before any one says slow down I am a 41 year old man driving an automatic compact wagon with two baby seats in the back. In other words I am not driving this thing to attract the squirrel. It just needs a little more ground clearance.

My Passat has been good, but, I was hoping to be averaging at least 37 MPG (with 80% HWY driving) by now (@ 80k KM), but, I am barely getting 35MPG. At any rate, for a similar size and performance gasser sedan that does 25MPG average, I am still saving ~$900/yr on fuel. Mind you, my Passat TDI put me down $28K CDN 2 yrs ago vs $23-25K on a similar class Big 3 gasser. The silver lining is the fact our cars have held their value very well, because its a diesel and because its not available new any longer.

We love our wagon. We bought it used with 30k miles and now it just turned 50k. We drove it to Durango last weekend and the car returned 37.9mpg (pen/paper) both ways, and that includes rather hard driving up the passes (Poncha and Wolf Creek being the big ones). The looks from other drivers are priceless when you pass them climbing a 7% grade at 80mph in OD. :D

Fantastic car. I do wish it had a 6 spd sometimes, but my wife drives it mostly and she likes the automatic. I also wish the car had a little better off-idle throttle response.

The only repairs made to the car so far consist of the ecu reflash and the pass side door lock switch went out. Both covered under warranty. Tires still look good, brakes are good, and it runs fine.

We also have an '06 jetta and that car is fantastic too.

I have 2 Passat '05 model year Passat TDIs each with 31K miles. Both are without a problem. One has recently had the "reflash". Not enough miles to know if the reflash makes any difference.
