Update: New Module works fine , verified
Hi Gang,
Well its been verified, the new 9W7 module works fine, Mr. Timewise was kind enough to do a thorough comparison between the two modules. IN summary the operation of the two units is virtually identical with a few minor tweaks. I copied the email I received in its entirety for the benefit of others.
If anyone needs a module, I still have them, some have a few scratches on the underside of the case. Since the module is hidden there are no aesthetic issues to deal with, and the modules are still fine function wise, I warranty against them being DOA for sure
New lower price
The price shipped for these units would be $275 in the US.
Here are his results:
Steve,
I can report that there are very few difference between the 7P6 035
730C. (I have a "7P6" with SW 0440 and HW 05.) None of these
difference are of any real significance.
---
The only changes I noted in the MFD+ menus was in the main "phone
connected" display. The 5K0 035 730 shows the name I had assigned to
my cell phone: "Jack's Motorola..." (there's a limit on the number of
characters). The older 7P6 on the other hand only shows "Motorola L2"
(the type of cell phone I have).
In the same "phone connected" display, the three connection symbols
are the same ...battery level, phonebook, and (something else)...if
and only if the paired phone sends the information. This is not a
change from the 7P6.
As far as I was able to determine, all other MFD+ menus are the
identical between the two modules.

The sound of the female voice is identical. However, there is one oddity...
In my 7P6 the female voice pronounces the word "Phonebook" as
"Phon-book". That is, the "e" is not emphasized. This correct
pronunciation applies to the system's own recorded word "Phone" as
well as my cell's saved phonebook entry such as "Home Phone".
However, I had previously reported that I occasionally I would hear
"phon-ae-book" when "phonebook" was spoken. Maybe this is unique to
my car, because other 9W7 users have never heard the odd
pronunciation of the "ae" that I reported many months ago when I
first installed the 7P6.
Anyway, the new 5K0 always says "Phon-ae-book". This includes the
system's own help menus, etc.
This is not a big deal, of course, just something I noticed. I do
find it odd that of all the words the system pronounces, the word
"phone" is the one word you'd think the system designers would get
correct.
There are other pronunciation anomalies that are identical in both
units. For example, the word "John" sounds more like "Don". And the
word "Rich" sounds more like "Rick". The important thing is that both
units sound alike 99.9% of the time.

The new 5K0 does have a few changes to the help instructions.
For example, when you say "Help" upon activation of the Push-To-Talk
button, the voice starts out by saying, "To call a contact, say, for
example, 'Call John Smith at home'."
The 7P6 on the other hand, mentions this command later in the help
instructions. Also, the wording is shorter: "Say, 'Call plus a name'."
There is a more detailed verbal description of how to connect to
Bluetooth in the 5K0. The system says, "To connect a mobile or media
player, say, 'Bluetooth Visible'." The 7P6 on the other hand, simply
says as one of the verbal commands, "Make Bluetooth visible."
The 5K0 also has a clearer Help description of how to make the
system's reading of the phonebook entries at some point other than
the first name in the list. Both units can do this, but the 7P6 help
menu isn't as clear in this regard.
---
The older 7P6 does allow me to press the PTT button and simply say,
"Sheila" to call my spouse. (Her name is only typed into my
phonebook...not as a voice tag.) The system immediately says,
"Calling Sheila" and then dials the number. Other names in my
phonebook require that I say, "Call office" and then the systems
says, "Do you want to call office?", whereupon I must answer, "Yes"
before the call is initiated.
On the other hand, the newer 5K0 always requires that I confirm a
repetition of the phonebook entry before the call is made.
Very few people have reported the ability to simply state a phone
book entry and have the system dial the call immediately.
---
The 5K0 allows you to enter a "voice tag" for a phonebook entry just
as does the 7P6.
---
The only other thing that I noticed in the 5K0 is that upon first
connecting the hardware and turning on the car, there was a rather
long MFD+ message stating,
"To start using the system, first take your compatible cell phone and
activate the Bluetooth function, and make it visible. Then start the
device search in the vehicle. Please refer to the owner's manual for
further information."
This only showed once.
It may be that any 7P6 will also show this message too. But since I
had hooked up my 7P6 before having the MFD+ instrument cluster, I had
not seen it previously.
---
The VCDS coding in the 5K0 is the same as in the 7P6. As with the
7P6, there is the requirement to enter a "work shop code". I used the
same code as had been in my 7P6:
Shop #: WSC 02172 444 59389
This info is permanently part of both units now. But I can reset
either unit to factory default in all other regards. Resetting the
9W7 to factory default is a command entered verbally or the MFSW
buttons. This will erase all phonebook entries and voice tags.
---
As far as I feel, the operation of both units is virtually identical.
The only disappointments of the 5K0 is the odd mispronouncing of the
word "Phone" and the apparent inability to make a phone call simply
by stating a phonebook entry.
