Second video shows an audi engine but it's the excat same, apart from engine cover.
Edit and big whoops. I quoted the video that talks about the CNRB, not the CATA.

This is video about CATA ... and thus about my comments on the HPFP:

More questions about the CATA video. He says that the HPFP that was in the original first gen was pretty much bullet proof (can we still use that pump? Probably not but had to ask) but the pump in 1.2 gen (shared with CNRB I believe) can blow up any time for a number of reasons. I just scored a 2012 with CATA with 114k miles and I'm wondering if I should, as part of preventative maintenance, go ahead and replace HPFP and injectors, since injector seals start to commonly leak around 120k etc.

Would this be a good idea? I was also thinking, if fuel dilution is happening due to bad injector/seal, that could contribute to rear main seal leaking and also timing chain issues (quality of oil degraded). Just "resetting" the fuel system could potentially have positive effects in other areas besides just preventing little metal bits from going everywhere.

Anything else I should change? Could a weak lift pump in tank contribute to HPFP failures???

I recently had to replace my MkV lift pump (has 260k miles) as it wouldn't start on a super cold morning but would a few days later when it warmed up. I changed the fuel filter while trying to get it started and I noticed that when I tried to run lift pump with VCDS, I could hear the pump run but never got fuel to come out of bleed screw hole. I had been noticing for quite a while when I did Italian tune up, I'd get a stutter around 4k RPM (felt like pump was losing prime or something). So I replaced the lift pump and the high RPM stutter on a hard pull is gone, so I bet my lift pump has been weak or not working at all and main pump has been doing most of the work. I'm guessing the HPFP on Touareg might be more sensitive to something like that, so wondering if I should just bite the bullet and replace lift pump too while I'm at it.

You're willing to put that kind of coin (I'm assuming you've priced out the parts already) into PM to replace working components on a ~12-14k vehicle? Is the rest of it mint or something and it doesn't require any actual maintenance or fixing?

I feel like ODBEleven is alot more handy especially cause it can read off your phone. Unless you dont mind just keeping the laptop in your car the whole time.
I've used and have both and the only thing I like better about obdeleven is that it is highly portable.
I have a hex-net interface though and it checks both the boxes of portability and usefulness. It also doesn't require a data connection for the phone as it creates a wifi signal.

Well, I probably shouldn't have gotten it if I had better judgement (my kids, ahem, adult children, gave me a T shirt for Fathers day last year that says "In my defense, I was unsupervised", but my wife actually went along with this purchase!), but I couldn't help myself ... even with admonishment from some here ha, ha. Maybe this will finally cure me of my TDI disease!

I can get OEM reman injectors with a warranty and new HPFP for like $2k. And will do work myself (have a 2 post Bendpak lift in pole barn), so yeah, I've probably lost my mind, but it's within my pain threshold.

The vehicle is immaculate, looks new inside and out. Oh, I did find something else wrong with it ... the driver side door lock button doesn't work. And I didn't like it not having a dip stick so I ordered one for it.

I did a VCDS scan and I remember seeing something wrong with the electric cabin heater and a few other things. Man, VCDS auto scan took forever! I'm used to scanning Jetta's ha, ha. Man there's a lot of "stuff" there.

Saw a few other "intermittent" (I hate seeing those or the "implausible signal") things but none of them were critical from what I remember.

I plan to look at the injector quantity stats and timing chain info when I get a chance. Dude used correct oil and did 6k OCI so I felt ok about it. Time will tell. Like I said, maybe this thing will "fix me" ha, ha.

Post scan... let's see how OK this thing is.
Do you plan on doing all the other missed "regular" and routine maintenance stuff as well?

Maybe, if I knew what they were. I'm new to the platform so go easy and don't give me a heart attack. I'm getting old.

Yeah, those would be entertaining. I'll have to search for those as I never looked at them before. VCDS is like the Bible ... inexhaustible in what it contains!

The guy didn't have VCDS, but I imagine his son does but he doesn't live near buy. I understand he's got a diesel Touareg, a diesel Cayenne and several gasser Cayenne's. He did the transmission service recently.

You got it. (You asked for it, you got it ... Toyota). I don't think I saved the original scan so will have to go do it again.

I'm more interested in what sounds this support bearing thing makes when it's going out. I hear noises that I don't know if it's normal operational noises (just cause I'm unfamiliar with it) or if it's an issue. I know the service manager at VW dealership, I might have one of his guys that's familiar take it for a spin.

Without seeing a scan, I don't know if you have a UDS or a CAN controller, so it's hard to tell you where to look.....
Typically, you go under engine and advanced measuring values and select the ones you want from the list

That sounds right. I've got HEX+CAN ross-tech cable that I got in like 2005/2006. I don't think it supports newer versions of VCDS or newer cars but it supports everything I currently have.

Cool story, but you're yapping about your interface while I'm talking about your engine controller..... not really sure why anyone cares what cable you're using at this point since we're talking about how information is pulled from your specific controller.

Whoops. I just realized my post about the HPFP I was talking about quoted the video that's on the CNRB, not the CATA. I edited my post with the video that covers CATA which has the comment about the HPFP my post was talking about. Sorry about that! Sometimers!

Because I'm not familiar with the "newer" stuff and haven't kept up with it, so was just giving you full disclosure as to what I have in case that mattered cause I don't know that I've ever heard of UDS before. But I know what CAN bus is as I've developed products that use CAN bus. I know there is a limit to what I have will do and I never upgraded to whatever is current today.

I'm using an RS232 cable... so don't worry... you're not the only one outdated or not modern.... get over it

Already beat you to it. Found some of this stuff yesterday ;):

Looks like it entered the VW world here in the US in 2008/2009. Only this year did I acquire/work on any VW vehicles that have ISO 14229 (UDS).

There are just too many to list....
Yep, just yet another way for the pencilneck electronic engineers to further justify their job. And pile more costs on to the consumer.

Might want to look into the age and stats of your battery there..... it appears it's been killed before!
You have a UDS engine controller, so extracting the information I mentioned in #36 above is just like I said... go to engine\advanced measuring values and select from list those two things.

Should probably also start your own post since we've hijacked this dude's post pretty bad.

And if you don't want to share all that, just show me these two values... for my own entertainment
Code:
IDE00584 Distance driven since erasing DTC memory
IDE00603 Number of driving cycles since erasing DTC memory

I have a new battery, just haven't put it in yet. The guy never replaced it the whole time he had it (2019 til now - 5yrs).

You have no idea.... I'm jumping up and down with joy at the moment.
So that, coupled with the fact that you've cleared all your readiness monitors is a very good thing.
You can now go into the engine controller and blow away that singular intermittent code if you care to do so.

I haven't cleared a thing yet. Only scanned it.

What I said isn't something that you do..... the system does it when all is good.... you just didn't understand what I said.
Um, I think after 19yrs of messing with TDI's and VCDS (VAG-COM back in the beginning), I know how readiness works, but thank you for your willingness to educate. For anyone that doesn't now about "readiness" (those "Readiness: 0 0 0 0 0" lines in my scan above):

... and on some vehicles you can set readiness on some things, so I was simply responding to "your words":

.... So that, coupled with the fact that you've cleared all your readiness monitors ....
Words have meaning. Perhaps a better word choice would have been "since your vehicle has already passed all the readiness tests; a very good thing, you can now go into engine controller ..."

.... you just didn't understand what I said.
Oh I've understood you line of questioning all along ... that I'm probably an idiot and most likely got suckered with the purchase. I have a sarcastic sense of humor too so 'takes one to know one' :ROFLMAO:

Yeah, I need to go start another thread, crapped this one up. But it has mostly been relevant to 2013+ Touaregs cause the stuff I've mostly talked about (injectors and HPFP) are the same on both CATA and CNRB.

I thought me mentioning the "D" word (fuel "dilution" possibly contributing to the oil leaks mentioned in the videos) would probably kick off some spirited discussion ... but crickets.

If you just want to argue about linguistics, I'm down.... but first, if
Words have meaning.
What dafuq does this mean? (if like you claim, you understood what I said)

Or maybe I'm an idiot who doesn't understand what #53 above means! (and as such, was possibly suggesting that you "cleared a code")

"cleared" was your word bro.

Meant exactly what I've said. I've only scanned it. I've not cleared any DTC's or attempted to reset any readiness codes ... further clarifying the "main point" ... all I've done is scan it. So I think we're done here.
