The winter months are nearing and I'm leaning toward Amsoil DEO. We know that 5W40 is needed for good cam protection with the oil having HT/HS around 4.0. With cold weather coming, low pour point is going to be important during start-ups. Amsoil DEO has a pour point of -46C or -51F. The TDT and T6 don't give a pour point temp and Amsoil looks to have the lowest pour point which is going to get the oil quickly to the cam during start up in cooler weather.Since it is out of warranty now, just go to your nearest FLAPS and get either Rotella T6 or Mobile 1 TDT in 5W40. BTW, VW's first spec of 505.01 was for 5W40, as I understand it; only later did they add a 5W30 version.
I was like you, concerned about the magical "505.01" spec until I learned more by reading these forums.
Yes, that's the puppy. IIRC, it is cheaper at Wal-Mart.Is this the oil that most seem to be recommending?

If I am understanding everyone correctly, the Castrol SLX LL03 507.00 was not backwards compatible with your 2003 Golf.Gotta say i like the shell rotella t6- after reading here how good it is and reasonably priced i put it in about 1000mi ago- I noticed after overnight sit, the valvetrain is quieter when 1st started- noise almost completely gone. Previous 2 oil changes were castrol slx LL03 507.00 5w-30 seeing as its backwards compatable for my 2003 golf. Figured i'd use it as i have to use it in my wifes 2010 A3. Before that tried total eneo mc3, before that total energy 9000. Think i'll stick with the Rotella T6. $35.00 5L at wal-mart- cheapest i could find- May have to do a cross border run and stock up some time.
VW 504.00/507.00 is backwards compatible with all previous VW specs. There are applications where VW says you can't use it though: "with the exception of Unit-Injector / Pump-Duse TDI without LongLife Service and without DPF between 1999-2003 and R5/V10-TDi before model year 2006"If I am understanding everyone correctly, the Castrol SLX LL03 507.00 was not backwards compatible with your 2003 Golf.
Shell Rotella T6 5W40 is cheaper and seems to be easier on cold starts in climates like yours according to other posts in this forum. It "works", but frankly I see no point in spending the extra money to run a thinner oil. Mobil1 TDT is always a winner, even if the price has shot up since I did my last change.
Then just pick it up at your nearest FLAPS.Thanks for the tip but I don't shop at Wal-Mart and I won't change my ways for oil.
Last two samples are with DEODoes anyone have any links to PD users using DEO with UOA?
TIA!!
I never had any issues while racking up hundreds of thousands of miles on my tdi's in MI and using TDT or Delvac1Shell Rotella T6 5W40 ...seems to be easier on cold starts in climates like yours...
I just stated what I saw posted here. There were some who said that when they switched to T6, their cold start problems went away.I never had any issues while racking up hundreds of thousands of miles on my tdi's in MI and using TDT or Delvac1
Does Shell Rotella T6 meet 505.01 spec?Yes, that's the puppy
Since you're out of warranty that no longer applies, I learned. The original specification is 5W40 grade 505.01. However, from what I've learned, the dealerships just use 5W30 grade 505.01 even if you are supposed to use the other grade.Does Shell Rotella T6 meet 505.01 spec?
Not sure anyone has purposely used M1 0w40 in a PD to see how well it works. It might work, but it might not. T6 and TDT are known to not be problems.I know what oil to use is beat to death, but I have seen a few folks mention mobil 1 0w-40 european car formula. So my question is would it be as good or better than Mobil 1 TDT or Rottela T6?
Thanks
I have been getting changes at the dealer, used M1 TDT in my last oil change so I'll stick to that. Not sure anyone has purposely used M1 0w40 in a PD to see how well it works. It might work, but it might not. T6 and TDT are known to not be problems.
