Since it is out of warranty now, just go to your nearest FLAPS and get either Rotella T6 or Mobile 1 TDT in 5W40. BTW, VW's first spec of 505.01 was for 5W40, as I understand it; only later did they add a 5W30 version.
I was like you, concerned about the magical "505.01" spec until I learned more by reading these forums.
The winter months are nearing and I'm leaning toward Amsoil DEO. We know that 5W40 is needed for good cam protection with the oil having HT/HS around 4.0. With cold weather coming, low pour point is going to be important during start-ups. Amsoil DEO has a pour point of -46C or -51F. The TDT and T6 don't give a pour point temp and Amsoil looks to have the lowest pour point which is going to get the oil quickly to the cam during start up in cooler weather.

Does anyone have any links to PD users using DEO with UOA?

TIA!!

For what its worth

I have 250kMiles on my '05 PD Jetta Wagon and I started out using 505.01 5w-40 and some 5w-30 until about 100KMiles. I then switched to Mobil 1 TDT and have had zero camshaft issues. The engine burns less than a quart between 10KMile changes. The old boy does seem to have lost a little pep lately, but can still pull in 45-55 MPG depending upon different factors.

Bottom line is run TDT or Rotella 6 and forget about it. Drive it til it drops. I was looking at Pennzoil Platnium (BTW, Pennzoil websites gives Platnium a 505.01 OK, but not on bottle and is $20/5 qts. w/filter at Advance Auto until 10/10/11) until the forums boo'd 5w-30 oils. Wally World stocks both TDT and Rotella 6 for cheap.

Forget about the VW approved oils( Scam oil) Have been running Rotella T6 in all my VW/Audi in the family. My tdi ran T6 before it got totaled, my mom and my brother's TDI Passats are running T6 my brand new Audi a4 TFSI is running T6. even the dealer said their castrol is crappy and Rottela is an awesome oil. I've done UOA on my oil pre and post T6 changed and i got 40% less metal wear on the PD with the T6. The T6 is one of the richest Zinc(candy for turbos) pack available. the oil has moly and some other anti friction packs. its CJ-4 which is approved for DPF on dump trucks. Its an HDEO oil. what do you want more... you are not convinced try it... your engine valve train will become quiter also.

Any walmart coast to coast has T6 available.

Gotta say i like the shell rotella t6- after reading here how good it is and reasonably priced i put it in about 1000mi ago- I noticed after overnight sit, the valvetrain is quieter when 1st started- noise almost completely gone. Previous 2 oil changes were castrol slx LL03 507.00 5w-30 seeing as its backwards compatable for my 2003 golf. Figured i'd use it as i have to use it in my wifes 2010 A3. Before that tried total eneo mc3, before that total energy 9000. Think i'll stick with the Rotella T6. $35.00 5L at wal-mart- cheapest i could find- May have to do a cross border run and stock up some time.

If I am understanding everyone correctly, the Castrol SLX LL03 507.00 was not backwards compatible with your 2003 Golf.

VW 504.00/507.00 is backwards compatible with all previous VW specs. There are applications where VW says you can't use it though: "with the exception of Unit-Injector / Pump-Duse TDI without LongLife Service and without DPF between 1999-2003 and R5/V10-TDi before model year 2006"

If we believe VW, 507.00 works in the 505.00 application.

It "works", but frankly I see no point in spending the extra money to run a thinner oil. Mobil1 TDT is always a winner, even if the price has shot up since I did my last change.

Shell Rotella T6 5W40 is cheaper and seems to be easier on cold starts in climates like yours according to other posts in this forum.

I never had any issues while racking up hundreds of thousands of miles on my tdi's in MI and using TDT or Delvac1

I just stated what I saw posted here. There were some who said that when they switched to T6, their cold start problems went away.

BTW, I never knew that there is a San Antonio up in Michigan.

I know what oil to use is beat to death, but I have seen a few folks mention mobil 1 0w-40 european car formula. So my question is would it be as good or better than Mobil 1 TDT or Rottela T6?

Thanks

Not sure anyone has purposely used M1 0w40 in a PD to see how well it works. It might work, but it might not. T6 and TDT are known to not be problems.

I have been getting changes at the dealer, used M1 TDT in my last oil change so I'll stick to that.

Thanks
