I have a 2015 Golf Sportwagen with 189000. Awhile back I noticed smoke and parked the car. It came from a part ( looking at the carfrom front) above left of the cover.. coolant a bit low so I thought it was vapor.
A week or so later I see smoke again... park at home and the top left has flames along with lower pan.

Repair 4500 with timing belt and secondary water pump needs replacing. Leaked under valve cover but not thought to be the seal.

Any input? I have done a reasonable amount of work on my vehicles but this sounds major. Too much to spend on an old vehicle? It shifts hard when parked uphill into reverse so that is concerning.

I appreciate any input and if anyone is around Philly to Baltimore who wants a chalkenge so I can undetstand the repairs let me know.

Thank you.
Love my car but...

Note dpf warning on intermittently prior to fire. They think the dpf caught the engine oil on fire.

What's the status / history on emissions modifications and warranty work? How does the area around the DPF sensors look?

There are just too many to list....
It is not common for these cars to catch fire. It is possible some critter made a nest in the engine area somewhere, and THAT caught fire.

But if you didn't investigate when you first saw smoke, then.... who knows... ???

My brother's RAV4 burned to the ground from a critter nest. It can happen, they are destructive.

It would be very difficult to explode a diesel powered vehicle unless you were transporting gasoline or other highly volatile flammable substance
