Hey everybody I have a 2000 ALH golf tdi , I replaced my head and injection pump . got it all timed and now when I crank I get a lot of white smoke don’t know because hasn’t idled for months . it starts runs poorly like it’s starving . here’s the catch I have a automatic they come stock with 11mm injection and I replaced it with a 10mm should still idle and operate right ?

Sounds like a timing issue actually... white smoke is unburned fuel, often retarded timing.

To confirm:

What procedure did you use to set the timing? All the locking jigs? Cam sprocket was loose when when you tensioned the belt?

Correct pin pumped and cam was seated when new head was installed . I’m pretty sure my cam to crank tdc is correct but when I pinned pump I had to forcefully move it to slide to pin hole . I’m think it went back when I had it all tensioned and good so it retarded the hell of it . and just moving it a little will will retard or advance it . so I’m thinking I need to move the pump timing . . Cam gear was loose correct . it will crank on blow white smoke run so poor then die out . if it was cam crank related when I manually cranked the engine it would hit a valve and make all noise and seize it imma try moving injection timing like you thought so

it won’t crank and idle and if it does stay on it runs so bad I can’t even get good idle

"I’m think it went back when I had it all tensioned"

It will take a little rotation of the pump sprocket to insert the lock pin (internal roller cam springs) but then you install the belt, tension it (with the cam sprocket loose), and then tighten the cam nut and the three IP sprocket bolts before removing the locking plate and IP pin.

Nothing should then move... if it does, best to start over. In particular, need to keep an eye in the flywheel that it hasn't moved off TDC. Standard proceedure is to then rotate the engine 2 full revolutions and re-insert the locking plate and IP pin, to make sure all three things are still exactly where they should be.

If you haven't found it yet the "A4 Timing PDF" is one of the best guides out there... pictures for each and every step. Linked in my sig.

Just checked pin is alighned with hole . I’m loosing hope . everything seems to be aligned up . I’m starting to think 10mm pump psi fuel 16000roughly and 11mm comes with 19000 psi of fuel . I’m thinking low fuel getting to injectors

Another thing to check... the actual IP timing hole or the all-too-common "sucker hole" ?

Some of us have been known to drive to cars with issues like yours to get them running. I doubt it would take me more than a few minutes to determine why you are having problems, and just a few more minutes to get it right if that is possible. Knowing where the car is, is just a tiny piece of determining if assistance is possible or not.
