Just fired up the new engine last night for the first time. I'm already regretting the BFI stage 2 mounts that I installed at the same time. Insane vibrations and noise. I got a headache after a 15 mile test drive. I won't be giving these much time to break in before I ditch them.

If somebody has a vibration analyzer app in his smartphone that uses the built-in accelerometer, it would be interesting to do a frequency analysis (FFT) of the vibrations. I would bet that the main source of the vibrations occur at exactly 2X engine frequency, i.e. 30Hz @900 RPM idle and at multiples thereof (0.25X, 0.5X, 2X, 4X, etc.).

Hey strox, you have a chance to try out those mounts yet?
Side question: I got a pendulum mount from HPA. Are they intended to replace just the lower half of the mount. OEM looks to be in 2 pieces. HPA only sent 1.

Well today I finally got around to installing the mounts...had sum issues that required me to drill the holes on one mount oblong to allow it to mount on the car correctly...

Also the insert for the sub frame I payed for does not match so couldn't install it..

So both mounts are in...and I actually might take the old mount and create a bracket to bolt to top of mount cause the commonrail fuel pump mounts to the top of the engine mount and these don't have that to mount it back...none of the mounts I looked at had these mount holes so I may create an bracket that you just tap and bolt it onto a mount to work...

Can wait for the results, hope these are noise/vibration free as the engine and gearbox mounts are getting ready on my car.

If not i'm going to have to plump for the petrol version vibratechnics from Darkside and live with a bit of NVH.

Needs these for A3/B4 Platform....

And it turns out they exist.

So what are the opinions on the DLI vs the vibratechnics ?

Well, the mounts do make things stiffer.. and this is with an lesser spring rate trying to control the viberations.. but i think if you bumped the rpms up at idle it is hardly noticable.. the only complain i have is.. it seems i get this noise resonating during acceleration i didnt have before the mounts upgrade... that literally sounds like the injectors... so i am going to look more into it.. its only present during acceleration.. and when your just cruising its much quieter.. but something i def didnt expect to hear from the motor.... i hope it gets less as they break in.. other than that added noise.. the vibration isnt as bad i expected.

Storx, have you had any experience with Vibratechnics? If so how do these compare?

I know any uprated mount is probably going to increase NVH and I can live with a little extra but I dont want crazy noises and a dash thats trying to shake itself loose.

I'm not surprised there's more "noise", surely higher frequencies are going to pass straight through the spring?

Well, i have owned a stage 1 BFI gasser setup in a MK4, i have rode in a Stage 2 BFI gasser, and i have rode in a BSH gasser setup as well. The BSH was the most physical viberation, the BFI where nearly the same between stage 2 and 1 except while driving there was more noise on the stage 2. I have never been in a upgraded mount tdi before so i have nothing to compare it to except gassers...

These mounts make less Physical viberations at idle... compared to all gasser setups i rode in.. but i have never heard this noise it makes.. I am starting to wander if i have an balance issue in my engine as i was looking at a friends tdi while idling and mine looks like a jack hammer compared to his at idle...

Hey I was looking at the solid metal spacers. Can you sandwich in grommets to absorb the higher frequency resonance?

Those spacers are scary enough, definitely would not add any softer material in there for any reason. The engine is hanging from them!

Thanks Storx. :)

Might hang on and see what happens with the Darkside/Vibratechnics diesel mounts.

Feel like i'm never gonna get a remap and exhaust done, other things keep getting in the way. Can't start on poor foundations tho.

In that configuration they are in tension, which is where bolts are very strong. Porperly torqued there should be very little shear forces.

I like my vibrations, it pleases the old lady at idle :p

I would.

Two 60 duro rubber washers. Eighth of an inch thick. Both above the spacer. 1st above the pendulum mount and the second below the pendulum amount. Then the spacer.

I redid the thread as a review for easier finding.. for specific mount.. but the spacers dont really hold anything up.. the bottom of the mount sits in a pocket and the spacer nearly float there to fill the space to prevent the ears of the mount from bending off.. Down... the kit comes with shim spacers to make sure the spacers are perfectly flush with the mount..

Ok I know many are excited by the fancy spring ones.

But what about going with new OEM mounts for engine and tranny side, and use it in conjunction with bfi stge1 dogbone ? Does anyone see any problem with this approach? I use it as daily driver, and need new mounts asap, was thinking the poly dogbone would tigten it up just a bit but nothing much. After careful condiferation not really interested in going BFI on all 3 mounts - just the dogbone -- I just dont want excessive vibe in cabin, and thought the oem engine mounts and bfi dogbone would be a good compromise... has anyone done this?

I did OEM mounts with the BFI stage 2 dogbone for a while. Vibrations weren't bad at all. Very nice setup, actually.

I bought all three BFI stage 2 mounts at once. I installed the dogbone first because my VF Engineering mount tore up its bushings and had to come out. The other two mounts were still fine, so I didn't change them until 25k miles later when I swapped my engine. I highly recommend against the stage 2 for all three mounts unless you're ok with tons of vibration. If these don't break in quickly, I'm going back to OEM top mounts and BFI stage 2 dogbone.
