Hey guys I have a 2014 vw golf tdi with the dsg transmission. I am going to be using this vehicle for lyft while I go to school. Does anybody here do lyft with their tdi? My main question is should I cut the oil change interval shorter? It says 10000 miles but I've only gone 8500 to 9000 then gotten it changed. Since I'll be idling and in stop and go traffic a lot, should I cut it down to say 5000 miles? And how can I make the tdi last long in general? Thanks guys.

There's one member on here that uses his TDI as a cab and another member that does all the service on that car. I don't remember either of them saying that they changed the oci.

There are just too many to list....
Dozenspeed's cab has nearly 430k miles and it gets the same 507.00 spec 5w30 at 10k mile intervals as it always has.

I feel that 5k is just wasting money. 9k? Eh probably fine. Oil changes are somewhat of a "when its convenient " so 9k or 10k your still fine. I would not go less. Oil filter every change. Quality filters can technically go for 20k.
My 2 cents! Not necessarily advice, just the way I've always read into it. As long as you have oil in it your not really doing much harm going further or sooner.

I've been told that the oil can go 20k, however, the filter needs changing more frequently.

I go 20 and change elements 10k. Been doing since 2001 on 4 different tdis I've had. No problems.

I don't think the long oil change intervals normally change filters half way thru as that would involve extra service. The quality filters have no problem going 20k+. I generally change them at that interval and the ones I've dissected have no signs of visible contaminates nor being clogged up. Worry less about filters.

Take any advice given here in context as to the engine in question. The ALH's oil and filters do NOT get nearly the workout that the CJAA engine does in the OP's car, especially post-Dieselgate fix. The ALH has no DPF, has a much less aggressive EGR duty cycle, and makes far less power.

It is always best to just stick with the standard OE schedule, and anyone contemplating doing anything beyond really does owe it to themselves to avail their engine of a quality UOA (ideally a few) to get a good base line.

^^^ exactly ^^^
Ask the scientist to test the oil before any modification.
The engineers already did tests and found that in most extreme cases 10k intervals are adequate.

When I drove Uber in my Golf, I followed standard OCI and other maintenance as called for in the owner's manual. Every mechanic always says "5K miles" not the 10K miles called for in the manual, saying something about "severe service".

My thought is oil is cheap and the lifeline of the engine and have always changed my oils before recommendations, been running synthetic for 20+ years on my last 6 vehicles and never ran one past 7500, I might push it further with this recommended 10k interval
