VW hat meinen '14 Passat TDiSE getötet.
I bought my car (to my shame) because I am a VW enthusiast.

If I were into making "investments", I would have bought Toyota/Lexus or Honda/Acura.

I plan to keep my car until it dies, or it gets replaced by another VW (or I really get tired of VW shenanigans).

If I were making an investment, I wouldn't have bought any car and bought stock instead.

Some collectors cars are investments. Maybe not good ones, but investments nevertheless. Daily drivers? Not so much.

The failure rate, so far. 5% on cars with less than xx miles. I would factor in a failure rate beyond 80k at 10%. So why buy a used car with  when the mk7 is coming soon? The only reason would be you like to gamble and hope to save money.
Not sure about that 5% number. Less than 500 complaints on NHTSA website which is less than 1%.

In my area, a TDI (if you can find a used one, nobody seems to want to get rid of them) seem to go for 1k to 3k more than a comparable gasser. I noticed this when researching before buying my '13 Passat SE TDI so it didn't bother me much to pay the premium to get the diesel because it seemed you could almost re-coupe it on the back side and still have the advantage of the economy.

It's funny to look at this thread while being subscribed to two others were the OPs are looking for MKIV Jetta Wagons. Many of the ones they're finding are north of 10K. This is for 10 year old cars with well over 100K on them. Sounds like an extreme lack of depreciation to me.

I got $14.7 K for the OPs car if he is serious.

Matter of fact if anyone can find me a 1 year old TDI Golf in excellent shape for under 15 K, I'm interested.

A car is a consumer product, an expensive one, but....nonetheless. As such, it loses a lot of value when purchased. For decades, houses were touted as an investment, one that were absolutely recession-proof. That bit of common wisdom has pretty much gone in the tank in the last five years. For people who buy new and trade often....well, that's the cost of doing business. We tend to drive them into the ground, and I still resent the cost. Four-wheeled money pits....

You gotta spend money on something. And houses still are a good investment as long as you don't get swept up in an inflating bubble and try to sell when it bursts. It's like watching individual investors repeatedly buy stocks when the market is high and get fed up and sell when it falls. They do it over and over again.

how much the TDI depreciates?

Bought it one year ago at $22,000.00
Market price today is at $14,700.00

How is that even possible?
I assume you have a 2012 Golf TDI MkVI with 22,000 miles and think it is worth $14,700? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
Tell you what I'll buy it.

How is this possible? You are just wrong period. You don't know how KKB works clearly. I will buy your TDI Golf for $14,700 right now.... Sell it to me. Fact is TDI's have very very very high resale and low depreciation.... The facts of what they sell for used is all I have to say.

Here is Kelly Blue Book for 2012, Golf TDI two door, Manual with 22K miles private party.

Excellent
$22,221
Very Good
$21,621
Good
$20,921
Fair
$18,971

Trade in Value
Excellent
$20,681
Very Good
$20,281
Good
$19,431
Fair
$17,231

That's because it's no longer a new car in the eyes of VW for incentives, or lenders for loan rates. You'll pay a penalty to get that car, enough that a '13 at a higher price may ultimately cost less.

was just offered 20.5K on my car to trade on a 13 same car....I paid 28k + taxes. 7.5K in 26 months and just under 80,000kms seems very reasonable on a brand new car that has cost me basic maintenance, no tires, no brakes. would not have been any better with ANY other car at 80,000kms....me thinks much worse. One of the reasons we buy TDIs is the resale!

On last year's new products, I've found that I can get the same rates as this years. When we bought the 2011 Golf in September of 2011, I got the same rate. There were no incentives offered on the TDIs at that time. however, if you look at most of the other companies out there, you typically get much better incentives for the year older model.

On the Chevy Cruze:
2013 has $1000 cash or $500 cash and 1.9% for 48 months
2012 has $1500 cash or $500 cash and 0% for 60 months
