Oh sure... just like I thought, Someone just threw out a number with absolutely no data to back it up. Sheesh! :D

I'd say somewhere in this range:

I'm running a scanguage, more to watch the exhaust gas temps (and therefore help me track the regens), but I keep the water temp displayed as well.

Very consistently, the car sits at 193-197 degrees. It occasionally bumps up to 200 when I'm idling a bit before shutdown.

since the original post is actually asking for the thermostat rating, the best guidance is to stick with oem parts.

the cooling system in the new engine for 2015 is not simple, and the computer is in the middle of everything.

http://pics3.tdiclub.com/data/517/820433_EA288.pdf is worth a read.

(and by the way it says the rating is 87c starts to open.)

It occurred to me that my 2015 Beetle TDI shows coolant temp in the digital MFA readout and not just a "needle gauge".

The coolant temp shows 195 almost always, once Ive gotten to operating temperature. It has been 199 once or twice, but drops quickly back to 195.

For those considering replacing a thermostat, I agree with Meerschm, Stick with OEM, especially considering in this age of "Things are easily and quickly ordered over the internet".

and for reference, the thermostat on my 2009 TDI was working just fine when I turned it in with 205,000 miles and nine years on it
