Swapping Wheels

I have a 2014 Passat SEL TDI that is going back to VW later this month. It has the nice multi-spoke wheels and relatively fresh tires. I also have a 2012 CC with rashed up five spoke wheels. Assuming they are swappable, I'd love to swap out the wheels. I think the CC would look great with the Passat wheels. I believe the CC wheels are the standard wheel on lower level Passat's of 2014.

Do you think that would jeopardize my buyback?

Not an issue. Swapped my 18" Passat wheels with my daughter for her 16" Jetta wheels.

I don't think so. Based on the wheels I saw on cars scheduled for buyback, many are not the stock wheels that came with the car. In fact, I saw some with steelies and worn snows. I also have not heard of anyone being rejected.

This brings up the question: I assume you need to swap the TPM (tire pressure monitor) stuff?

I'd like to repurpose some JSW 16" on to my e-tron for more efficient summer driving (e-tron Ultra has same size as JSW) but was worried about the TPM syste, not knowing anything about it.

Also, I was thinking of trading a VW Gasser my JSW alloys for his steelies plus a little cash if a local guy wanted to upgrade cheap. Again, what about the TPM?

(We have 2 JSW, hence two repurposings)

yes, I was wondering about the TPM stuff myself. I have no idea what that entails. Is it complicated?

I know my 2011 JSW had a new TPMS system that was based on wheel rotation instead of inserted stem sensors. Being newer, I bet your car likely has the same thing.

So what you do is make sure tires are inflated properly and then press the and hold the TPMS set button in the glove box until the display shows they are set. That's how I always set it for the JSW, going from winter wheels and back again.

My MK7 cars seem to have this built into the MIDI.

Yes, Newer VWs do not have Sensors. They look at the speed of each tire relative to the others. Once you swap, there is a button in the glove box to set it for the new tires / wheels.

Cool thanks. I'd assume (and will check for sure) that the Audi works the same way...

I think 2010 was the last year for in-wheel TPMS. I know our 2011 uses the ABS-based system. Just look at the valve stems. If they're rubber, no sensors. Easy peasy.

Just my $.02 worth but IMO if you can drive it into the dealer's lot with four flat tires under the car's own power you're good to go. There was a post a few days ago where a very stripped down Jetta was supposedly driven in under it's own power - buyback went smoothly according to that post that linked to an online source.

Yeah, it is more a question of trading wheels with someone who has steel wheels on a gas Jetta or something and needs the system to still work (or me wanting to use them on my Audi).

I have snow tires on tirerack wheels. I assume the stock 18" wheels would be more valuable on craigslist than the tirerack wheels with snow tires? Guess I have a choice to make. Driving in on Jan. with snow tires should be expected.

My 2013 Jetta is getting turned in with worn out Blizzaks on Tire Rack steel wheels. Once I get my turn in date, those go on. They are worn down to that hard rubber compound that sucks in the rain.

I was holding off on swapping over to the winter wheels and tires, but we are getting our first measurable snow tonight into tomorrow, so they went on today. Depending on what car we end up replacing the Passat with, either the summer tires go back on and we keep the snows for the new ride, or the snows go with the trade and we sell the summers. ContiSport Contacts with not too many miles on them and clean (although not perfect) wheels that can go to a new home.

Follow up question for the experts on the TPM issue. My 2012 CC shows actual pressure #s as opposed to just identifying that a tire has a pressure issue. I think it also has metal valve tip. Does that mean sensors on the valve? Does that complicate the swap?

You will either need to have a shop put TPMS sensors in the wheels that you're putting on the CC or disable the TPMS system. If you just put your Passat wheels on there, you will get a TPMS warning light.

Is it worth it?

My buy back car, a 2013 Passat TDI has 18 in. alloy wheels with Cooper Grand Touring tires (10000 miles on tires). My replacement car is a 2016 Passat TSI SE with tech. and has stock 17 in. alloys with Continental tires (~2000 miles on tires).
Thinking of switching the wheels and tires since I like the larger diameter wheels and I think the Coopers are a better tire, but not sure if it is worth the $50-$75 to do the switcheroo. I have till Feb. to decide.
Of course, the other alternative is to buy some inexpensive wheels with cheap or worn out tires, but haven't had in luck so far with that.
Any suggestions on the best course of action.

I'm keeping my stock 17's for my 11 Golf and selling them along with the tires that have about 30K on them and turning it in with some take-off's and bald tires but other than that I"m not stripping it.

Post a want-to-buy ad in the classified section here for worn-out snow tires on steel wheels.

Mine will be going back looking like this, I'm using the stock alloys for the snow tires on the '16...

Do we have a wheel swap thread going? I posted in the regional group, looking to trade the 16s that are on my GLI (my TDI replacement) with 17s so I have something a little nicer for winter...

The buy back specialists would have to be really, really fussy to question the wheels. If they do, just say the originals were severely damaged by potholes, and these are the ones you replaced them with.

Just don't do something stupid, like trying to turn the car in on space saver wheels and tires.

What could they possibly say?

Question. Selling back my 2011 Golf Tuesday and still no offer on my 2014 Jetta. Jetta tires getting thin and Golf tires were new. I think 15" on the jetta and 17" on the golf. So I brought them to a sop today and had them swap the rims. Took a few miles but the TPMS light on both cars came on and won't go off. What do I have to do?

Put air in the tires and reset the TPMS. Both of those cars use the ABS rotation sensors and have no pressure transmitters.
