My BHW TDI swap is into a racecar. I am trying to follow the KISS method with everything I do. As far as gauges I want a speedo, tach, water temp, oil pressure and charge light. Charge light comes from the ECU and speedo will be GPS. So I need tach, water temp and oil pressure. What is the hive's opinion?

OBDII?
Aftermarket gauges?
Connect to factory sensors?

Kinda depends on what you're after, the ecu will supply all that information if you keep the factory sensors. Possibly keep the vw Gauges. Aftermarket gauges are always an option, I went full auto meter in my 79 when I built that/ diesel swapped it. But they needed their own sending units. There are some pretty fancy electronic dashes out these days, kinda spendy, but may be what you're looking for. Lots of options really. I'm sure something like a scan gauge could be rigged up off an obd port as well.

I'm running the factory BHW cluster in my 87 4 runner.

Tach runs off of ECU as does oil pressure and temp.

Fuel gauge runs of factory yota in tank sender via a cheap eBay adjustable converter

Speedo runs off of a universal vss that uses the drive shaft flange bolts (4) and a fast forward adjustable converter box. I'm less than 4mph off at 75, could fine tune more but I've never had a factory settings vehicle that close

Used electric tape to cover all the SRS, brake and wiper fluids type warning lights I wasn't using. Also covered up the display screen as it read immobilizer on it every start up. I could get that programmed but ...it's an 87 Toyota
