It started with the discovery of water in the headliner, in the lights, also water inside the visor when I opened the mirror. Took it in for service, they cleaned the drain tubes and charged me $125.oo.
One week later the same problem, service manager claims I shouldn't have to pay for cleaning drain-gave me a credit. Took it in a second time, by now the sunroof is not closing unless I restart the car- again they blame it on plugged drains, said next time I will have to pay for it.
Two days later the sunroof is not closing until I restart AND start driving. Called the service dept. they said they will get back to me, that was 2 days ago and I haven't heard from them.

Anyone else have these problems?

They should not have charged you for the work. The service adviser at the dealership that takes care of our vehicles told us VW covers the repair twice during warranty period.

All these sunroof issues make me really glad I got the unholy roof.

Is this the same roof as on the Golf hatch?

I hope I don't have to deal with this crap on my Golf. I tried to avoid the sunroof, but it was pretty much impossible. Only the most stripped down cars didn't have a sunroof. :(

I have never seen a golf with sunroof that did not have either xenons or nav. Mine is base. No cold weather, no sunroof, rcd, halogens, 6M.

An no, this is not the same roof. The JSWs seem to have an ongoing problem with this, unfortunately.

The xenon headlights and nav were no-brainer options for me... I know how expensive VAG xenons are and the AFS feature is very cool. If I got halogens, I'd eventually install HIDs anyway. I do a lot of night driving and the diff b/w halogens and HIDs is like... well.. night and day. :p

Sunroof is expensive and prone to failure, though. I tried... but stock levels (and choice, consequently) are dwindling. If it had both options above, it had a sunroof.

aftermarket mechanical sunroof

Very sorry to hear it Yardstick.

I owned a Honda CRX Si with a sunroof. It failed eventually, and started rusting out bigtime. I bought car for my mom that had a failed open/close mechanism, and replacement 'cable' was over $300. We sealed it up and left it.

I decided from then on, no electric sunroof. There are aftermarket mechanical pop-up sunroofs out there that I decided to install at some point on my JSW. These seal with a tight compression clamp on replaceable foam rubber ($20 replacement seal). The one I will install has a two position clamp on the rear side, and the glass panel is removable. And there is a moonroof cover panel, too. And it costs about $250 before installation (I know a very good body shop that will do it for under $150 on top of that).

That pano roof looks like a serious weak link to me. If you are buying, and you do not live in Southern California, think twice about that sunroof!

There was actually a class action lawsuit against VW for their crappy sunroof drains. Look up the Water Ingress Administrator. Unfortunately for me my car was too old to be included for anything substantial in the lawsuit (I got an insert for my owners manual telling me to clean my drain plugs), but if nothing else you should be able to use it as leverage when dealing with the dealership on this issue.

After my drains plugs clogged up the first time, I cut them off at the recommendation of my mechanic (don't know how warranty issues might come into play).

Does Yardstick live in Vancouver? I don't see that mentioned anywhere.

The reason I asked about the weather, if it gets below freezing, you're asking for trouble by opening the sunroof, especially if the temps fluctuate +/- freezing. Several people have had the pano-rooves implode in freezing weather.

Yes, I can see he's in Vancouver too from previous post...

It went below freezing a few time this year. I like to open the roof in the winter when it's sunny but never when it goes below. I thought the shatter roof happened when it was really cold (like -20c).
