Hi, what is the best oil to use for the pd engine as the 5w40 quantum platinum has now been cancelled?
The new replacement is the 5w30 quantum platinum plus 23
Has anyone used it yet? Is the 30 good protection for the pd engine?

Also is the longlife 3 5w30 507 oil thinner than a normal generic 5w30? Basically are long life oils thinner?

Thanks

507 oils are thicker than most 5w30 oils at operating temp. I'd use 5w40 in your PD. Any 5w40.

That car would need the 505.01 spec which is most often found in 5w40, though I have seen it in 5w30 before.

I know 505.01 is the oil to use, but what I'm saying is the quantum platinum is now finished. Non existant. So what oil from quantum should be used? As quantum are vw trade

Thanks.

If 507 oils are thicker then the generic 5w30, doesn't that then mean 507 5w30 oils are ok to use? Buy your then saying use 5w40? Thanks
Probably, yes. It's very common for PD owners in Europe to use 507 oil, and they don't seem to have a big issue with cam wear as a result. I'd still be more comfortable with a 5w40 or 0w40.

OK mate, thank you

The main reason questioning if the long life 5w30 was thinner than the generic 5w30 oils on the market was because I thought as it might have extra additives to make it long life and that might affect the thickness buymaking it thinner which would be bad for the camshaft. But if infact it's thicker than other 5w30 it must be as good as a 5w40. But I understand its OK to use on a pd engine as its backward compatible 507.00. But if I find out its thinner I'm going going to for for a 5w40. Thanks for your help

I'd just get the 5w40. It's thicker than 507 at operating temp. Most "generic" 5w30 around here is neither synthetic or diesel rated. Every 5w40 I've ever seen is both synthetic and diesel rated.

Yes good point. Here in North America the use of unsuitable (non-507) oils in PD TDIs , mostly by ignorant dealers, caused enough damage ($$$) that anything with 5W30 label is understandably frown upon.

In my research, in Europe, 507 oils have given adequate protection to PD cams and, in some model years, they were required as said PD TDIs had diesel particle filters (DPF).
