Sudden Increase in Mileage

I just had my 2011 Jetta TDI DSG in for the first service (15,000Km). Prior to this service I would get approx 700Km/tank of fuel. (this is with the studded winter tires) I filled up the day of the service and I now have 600Km on this tank and the gauge is still above the half mark. The MFD is indicating I will get another 400Km + from this tank.
Anyone else have such a drastic, but welcome, increase in FE after the first service?
Anyone know why I would see this kind of increase?
Not sure why but it sure is nice!!

The indicated mileage will fall more rapidly at the last 1/4 tank.
When the refuel light comes on you'll probably reach 850~900 KM.

I'm only around 4,000 KM and my fuel guage is indicating I can travel 1,060 KM after I refuel and it stays at that till the 3/4 tank level then it drops to show 970 KM (includes distance travelled).

I normally refuel when I reached the last 1/8 tank and it takes around 52 L with 839 KM covered.

Once I was able to get 907 KM in a tank.

I expect when the temp rises 1,000 KM / tank may be possible.:D

I do realize that the bottom portion of the tank will fall faster then the top section. But this tank of fuel is much differant than any of the previous ones and I have almost 16,000Kms on it now. Have only once got 800km from a tank and that was 100% highway driving.
In the past when I fill the tank the gauge shows that I will get in the high 700km range, never in the 800's. As I said in the previous post I'm over 600Kms now and still above half a tank on the fuel gauge. MFD indicates I will get another 400Km.

Normally, routine service will not cause your mileage to change (unless some software changes (updates) were done). However, this time of year 2 things happen that can improve mileage. You might be seeing fuel with less "winterization" (which equates to more BTUs per gallon). Also, higher ambient temps improves mileage for several reasons including faster warm-ups. Other than that, could there be any changes in your driving style? These are all possible reasons for improved mileage. My theory is that you shouldn't worry too much about improved mileage. It's bad mileage that can indicate a problem.

Have Fun!

While I don't think it had anything to do with your question, keep in mind that measuring mileage by the tank, rather than by the mile can be very unreliable. Too many variables can sneak in. :D

Even when you are doing miles per gallon, if you want really accurate numbers you will compare results over several tank fills.

Are you still using the studded tires? I switched back to the all-seasons last week and my highway mileage went from 38-40mpg highway to 48 highway.

Yup, still have the studs on but thinking about removing them soon. Up in these parts I don't like to take them off before the end of March. Although nice here today, I know we'll see more snow before the arrival of the summer weather.
Almost 750km so far on this tank and MFD is indiacting 280km more. I'm getting nervious thinking that it's not working correctly.

It's probably working correctly. Fill up and do an old fashioned calculation for mpg or km/g to see if the numbers make sense.

Ya, I do a calculation with each fill up. I'm a bit curious now to see how many Km I will get from this tank.

Just filled up this morning with 805Km on the clock. FIlled it until I could see the fuel in the neck of the tank and it took 42.937 liters @ $1.321/L.
According to my calcs, this equates to 52.95MPG.
Last fill up was March 10. 690Km and it took 50.938L. = 38.25MPG.
Didn't do anything differant. Same tires, filled at the same station, weather has been the same, same combination of highway/city driving ~ 40/60.
Can't expalin it, but I like it!!

I've heard that when you go in for your first service you will experience gains in fuel economy and power due to them changing the the oil. Apparently the oil that comes in it off the start it much thicker to help with the breaking in process of your engine. this is what the dealership told me when i bought mine.

is VW507.00 only in 5W30 grades?
Yes. This has been discussed as nauseum.

But, the 5w30 507s also carry the MB229.51, BMWLL04, and ACEA A3/B4 ratings.

There are 5w40 oils that carry MB229.51, BMWLL04, and ACEA A3/B4 ratings...so it's presumed that these 5w40s will be safe for the CR-TDIs. I don't want to be the guinea pig on this, so hopefully some people will use it and post UOAs.

ME too,

better mileage right now, no oil change only warmer outside temperature!

Very nice and I'm still on winter tires .

I'll let you know in 2 weeks when I'll change tires.

car has 7800km and it's torque BEAST, I think I'm lucky the engine seems very powerful to 3700 rpm..overboosting just before 2500 rpm for a blast.

Low end torque is not that powerful tho. under 2k 2.1k nothing really happen. My last GTI had less lag with the GIAC OY3 update it was an instant Torque machine under 2k.

I'm happy but I could imagine what this new TDI could acheive with a good chiptune with better low end torque and power... wow
