Just got the tires switched on my 2001, TDI 1.9l with approx. 130,000 miles. One of the rear struts are leaking. Any where from $725-$910 to replace all four struts. Will also need an alignment but one dealer says if need to move engine must go to dealer for that. I am real touchy with any dealer activity. Any input on that/suggestions is appreciated.
Thank You

We have strut and shock sets for your car for as low as $249. Struts are in the front, shocks in the rear in your car. You could just replace the rear shocks for about $110, no alignment needed. You may need front struts at some point, but at 130K if you don't want to spend the money maybe you could go a bit before replacing them.

Labor on rear shocks should be low, an hour or two, tops. And for all four labor should be about three hours. You probably won't need the engine subframe shifted when aligning the car, but alignment shops can do this, too. You don't have to take it to the dealer.

You should find a good shop that specializes in VWs for the suspension work. They don't have to be a TDI shop since the suspension is the same on a gasser. But a VW specialist will help a lot.

DR. Volks here I would take a good look at the front top strut rubber bushing and bearings.
If the the top strut aluminum caps on the ground got more then a 1/4 inch space it needs them done and the sway bar bushings .
Take a close look at the bottom of the coil springs the last coil most likely is broken.

That's the craziest thing I've heard in a long time. Order the shocks & struts online. Install the rear shocks yourself. Make some phone calls & shop around for a place that will install the struts for a reasonable price.

???? bilstein tc all 4 and ALL mounts and bumpers and boots, 464 on ebay, no springs, but your springs should be ok, this is a job ANY mechanic can do, there is nothing special about volks suspension. I could do it all in 2 hours, maybe 2.5 depending on how the alignment goes, TOTAL should be... 500, 200 labor, 80 alignment, 900 TOTAL. lower this by doing what you can yourself
