Ok, my wife's 2000 TDI Beetle makes a wierd noise at startup. It sounds like "ERRRUUuuwwww" and it lasts for 2 secs then stops. It happens on most startups but not all.

Some other posts said something about dust in the starter but to me it sounds like it is coming from the clutch.

Any ideas??

The "strangled Chicken" noise is the Starter. The bendix needs a little lube.

The Flywheel "slings" the starter bendix out when the engine comes alive (starts), and the speed of the bendix is increased tremendously for an instant. (This all happens just as you release the ignition key.) So, if the starter shaft is in need of lube, your going to hear a "strangled chicken" sound ........ or a pig squealing! Almost every time you start the engine ......LOL

I have an extra standard shift starter, but I have never disassembled it. The Bendix is not made similar to a typical old style starter (simlar to GM and Ford).

So, it may need to be disassemble to do the lube job. Or, maybe some spray type of lube would do the job.

Maybe some one else can chime in here!

You'll go blind...
Apparently they don't have a good partner.

Starter gunked up. Remove, clean, install, smile.
