Strange smell in car- do I have an exhaust leak or an emissions issue?

Car is a 2010 JSW with DSG, 223,000 miles, with the CEL on and DPF light that comes on and goes off every so often. I have been ignoring the CEL and DPF light for months/years because the car has always ran strong without hesitation.

I was driving back from the store a few days ago at about 45-50 mph, noticed a strange smell, like someone just lit a match or how the streets smell like after people light of fireworks. At first I thought something was on fire and pulled over and looked under the hood but did not see anything smoking or aflame.

The next day, I ran a VCDS scan and had the following 2 emissions-related error codes:
1) 011174 - NOx Emissions Exceeded
P2BA6 - 000 - SCR Catalyst Malfunction - MIL ON

2) 006744 - NOx Catalyst
P1A58 - 000 - Regeneration Required

I have never forced a regen so I had to research the VCDS procedures to force a regen and did it twice in my driveway; the first time took about 10 minutes and the second time took about 25 minutes. I sat in the car the entire time with the air conditioning on (air recirculation mode on) and never got the match-like smell.

I then tried to clear all the fault codes.

I then took the car for a steady 45 mile drive between 55 and 60 mps with the RPMs varying between 2000 and 2400 rpm. With the a/c on with recirc mode, I got the smell about 10 miles into the drive. I opened the windows (while driving) to clear out the smell and then drove for another 10 miles with a/c on but recirc off and couldn't get it to smell. Drove with recirc on and then got it to smell again. Turned recirc off and smell eventually went away.

Got back home, shut off the car and noticed the fans stilled stayed on for a few minutes before shutting off. I then rescanned it with VCDS and had the following 2 emissions-related error codes. I notice the earlier scan went from SCR catalyst malfunction- MIL ON to Intermittent on the second scan (but the DPF light was on the entire time and never shut off with I was testing things out):
1) 011174 - NOx Emissions Exceeded
P2BA6 - 000 - SCR Catalyst Malfunction - Intermittent

2) 006744 - NOx Catalyst
P1A58 - 000 - Regeneration Required

The car is I am not sure if this is an indicator that some part of my emissions system is just totally done and can't be solved by forcing more regens or is there some kind of exhaust leak that is coming into the car maybe from within the engine compartment. I do not think it is a door or rear hatch seal because the smell was happening when I was driving a good speed and not sitting at idle.
