I just did a full scan using 00 to FF on my 2005 Passat TDI (manual transmission) using VCDS version 16.8.2.3. I wanted to find all the controllers in order to make a custom scan file for my vehicle. I ended up finding 01, 03, 15, 16, 17, 19, 33, 3F, 46, and 56.
The 33 and 3F controllers returned the following in the log file:
Address 33: OBD-II Labels:
VCID: 55ABEFB8AC8D28EAB7-515A
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 3F: Unknown Address: 3F Labels: None
VCID: 55ABEFB8AF8D28EAB7-5120
No fault code found.
What do those controllers do?

Just checked an old VCDS Auto Scan file and there were neither a 33 nor a 3F address.

Those are both "ghost" controllers, that don't really exist but that the factory VW protocols (and scan tools) can ping for some reason. 33 is Generic OBD-2 so if you were using an old VAG-1552 you could check it by pressing 33 then Q. In VCDS the equivalent is to click on OBD-2 from the main screen:

3F seems to be some sort of backdoor to another module (like 17-Instruments) that speaks normally at another address:

when I first bought my cable 11 years ago, I did not get those controllers to show up. Something must have changed in the software since then ;)
