stock exhaust pipe material

Anyone know what metal the stock exhaust system is? 02 Jetta tdi
Just wondering because i know if its not a certain metal you cant weld it.

Should be weldable. Usually they are a stainless or Aluminized

Most of it is 400 series stainless - 409 is a common alloy for vehicle exhausts. Mildly magnetic, easily formable, low cost and much more corrosion resistant than plain or aluminized coated steels.

Aside from that piece behind the cat which is crap aluminized for some reason and always rots out.

I use 308 mig wire to weld the oem stainless. Holds up great.
