On the back of the steering wheel there is a copper ring about maybe 3 inches diameter.
On the indicator stalk mechanism there is a contact that wipes on the back of the steering wheel.
A little bit of vaseline on the contact will get rid of the noise.
If you put you head underneath the steering column and look up into the gap between the column and the steering wheel then you see the contact. You can put a dab of vaseline on a small screwdriver and transer it to the contact by poking it up into the gap. No need to take the steering wheel off.
My '98 Jetta does that - sometimes. Might do it for a day or so, then goes silent for a week or a month, you never know. Now I know what to do about it next time it begins making noises. Thanks!
