Steering wheel module not connecting VCDS

OK, so i went and bought a GTI wheel with paddle shifters for my 2011 Jetta sedan. Got it installed, and everything works as far as the buttons go (as i expected). However, when I went to change the coding for it to add the paddle shifters, VCDS is telling me that the module isn't responding. I've tried key on, key off, motor on, motor off. nothing. I'm using VCDS Beta 12.10.7. anyone have any insight or hints on how to get this up and connected?

Oh i should add that i put the old (stock) wheel back in, buttons worked, no response from controller.

funny story... I had to make a run up to the post office... mid drive i thought "I wonder what happens if i hit the paddles right now..."

Boom. it worked. No coding needed....
