Today marks the 15th anniversary of the day I purchased my 1998 Jetta TDI new from Mattie Imports in Fall River, MA in 1998. I drove my first 100,000 miles and passed through 29 states before it was three years old! I drive less now than I did back then. But my MK3 is still my primary car (back up is the wife's 2003 Passat). Had I known I was going to like the car this much and drive it this far, I would have invested in a better camera, taken more photos and drove it to a few other states when I was closer to them.
I created a commemorative video to celebrate the anniversary. There's nine seconds of speeding through "mod shots." After that, it's just a photo journey through time showing many of the places the car has taken me. I tried to share a few of photos from each year and then a bunch from 2011's road trip. You may notice grainy photos from the early days before I had a digital camera.
The music featured suits my journey over the years
(not quite as good as "As I Am" by Dream Theater). It's my answer to those who've said, "Why a VW," "Why a diesel," "It's only 90 horsepower," "You need a new car," "You need a bigger car," "You need a truck if you're going to tow," "The wheels are too small," "You should get <fill in the blank>," "Needs more low," "It has so much potential," "Your bicycle is worth more," "What wrong with having a car payment," etc. LOL! The song is an anthem for those who do their own thing while being neither sheep nor instigators. Let's see how long it stays up before being blocked by YouTube. Enough babbling. Here's the 2:08 video:
