There are some shorter routes that get it down to about 9300 miles, but you don't see as many places along the way. It's definitely worth the extra 600 miles to hit a few cool cities along the way.

You MUST use the pacific coast highway if you ever take a road trip north/south in California. Work sends me all over the country and the trips that I enjoy the most was driving on that highway. Seriously some of the best ocean views I've ever seen.
Anyway here's my list...

I am blessed to have a job that sent me to most of the places on my map. I was able to spend a day in/around Seattle. Went up the space needle and while I was up there I was talking to one of the folks there commenting on Mount Rainier. I said "that cloudy looking thing over there?" (fairly hazy that day) they replied "yep". Looked up directions and saw it was only a 2-3hour drive. The time of day that it was I hopped on the elevator and got in the car for a nice drive. When I got up there close to mount Rainier I had to make a pit stop... I couldn't help but notice the air had such a clean smell. All I could smell was pine trees.

I've also had the chance to drive up and down the Pacific Coast Highway. One trip up from Bakersfield to San Francisco and from San Francisco down to LA. That is one of the most beautiful and fun roads I've ever driven on.

Back in 1981 I put 7,500 miles on our new Jetta (1.7 liter gasser, automatic) during the first two months of ownership. Picked it up on Memorial Day weekend in Luxembourg and drove back to Bremerhaven, Germany. Oh the gas gauge didn't work so I just topped it off after about 175 miles. On Monday took it into the VW dealer and got it fixed. About three weeks later we left for a 30-day camping trip around Scandinavia.

Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas. Total 16 different States

I really would like to long drive to Los Angeles from Toronto. Any tips on the best route.
Having a TDI, I have to make sure there are gas stations with diesel. Many of the smaller stations, specially in country areas, I wonder if they carry diesel.

In rural areas, most trucks have diesel engines so you won't have troubles finding diesel there. It's in the cities that you may have troubles.

I have never had a problem finding fuel anywhere in the country, except for in very rural areas at night, when some stations are closed. To avoid that problem, fill up at 1/4 tank rather than running into the danger zone. With a 2015 Passat, you have 700+ miles to find the next fuel station.

All of these have been visited via car, with the obvious exception being Hawaii. Up next will be Kansas and Oklahoma, though I might just fly there and rent a car.

Arizona is a must see. The sunsets and starry nights are two of the many reasons to visit

The last of the states that I visited in the lower 48 was a walk-in, Nebraska! Back in 1988, I was with some guys pheasant hunting in north-central Kansas. We accidently crossed the state line while out in the bush.

Unless there's a bridge, I'll never be visiting Hawaii as my wife will not fly. And, of course we've been to Alaska 8 times over the last 30 years, VW Vanagons.

Seems I've been to all of the Provinces of Canada except Labrador and PEI ...

We are tentatively planning another road trip to Alaska this summer. We may leave in early August and on the return trip swing by the TDI Fest in Wisconsin if that works out to be the place.
