I know what the title says but that's what's happening. It will run for about 3 seconds then dies. 2005 1.9 5 speed lost power to the gauges and oil light came on going down the highway. Coasted into a gas station and shut the car off and now it won't run long. Any ideas?

Ok, so that's why your car is currently starting normally but stopping after a few seconds... the IMMOB triggers and tells the ECU to shut off the engine.

That's not why your car stalled on the highway however... the IMMOB is only queried during starting.

My guess is that something happened electrically to the car on the highway which caused the engine to die, and whatever it was has now confused the IMMOB. An oil light would be normal in that situation, but losing power to the gauges is not.

As something to try to fix the IMMOB you can leave the key in the "ON" position for 5-10 minutes... sometimes the cluster will re-acquire the key that way.

There's still the question of why the car stalled and the cluster gauges lost power originally...don't personally have any suggestions there.

It didn't stall on the highway I coasted it to the gas station not putting power through but letting it idle and turned the engine off when I got to a parking spot. But I have gotten rid of the IMMOB light but it's still doing the same thing.

After it dies it just cranks but if you shut the key off and try again it will fire and shut back off and repeat

I would test to make sure that you have flow from the intake pump, pull the supply line off the filter housing when you cycle the key you should get a squirt of fuel.

My car would do that disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it fixed it, but it hasn’t done it for years now.

I've been doing a lot of research and seems to be electrical some say ECU and some are saying a few other things I'm not sure I agree with but if it is an ECU issue is that a dead note for this Jetta? I really want to keep this car I'm loving the fuel mileage and I'm wanting to bring it back from the neglected state it's in.

I think the issue lies in the steering column more likely as others say the immobilizer sounds like it's tweaking my car key broke so I had to tape the rice chip thing from the key to the ring around the ignition switch I gotta press it with my thumb to start the car or she shuts down like that.
