I've always made a spare door key incase keys are locked in the car. With the Passat key/FOB, this is not possible (as far as I can tell). Anyone know of a way to make a door key only? TIA!

I remember reading in the Jetta? forum where they were talking about you couldn't lock your keys in the trunk or car. The car knows its there and when you go to lock and close the it auto unlocks? I'd guess it works the same for these cars, dunno.

Other than that no way I know of outside of paying $$ to the dealer.

I think that is the case only if car is not running with key in ignition. If keys are on the console or out of ignition, I believe car can be locked.

Didn't you receive two keys? I thought I did, but I always store the spare key in an envelope with all the vehicle paperwork for backup/emergency.

KESSY does not allow one to lock the doors with a key inside.

However, you can walk away from your running vehicle with the key and someone can steal it. They'll have problems the next time they try to start it, but it's still gone!

You could make a key that will mechanically unlock the door, but that's ALL it will do. It won't start the engine.

I just tested the locking your key in the car scenario with our non-KESSY SE.

There are three options for locking a key in the car.

1.) You lock the car with the 2nd key
2.) You roll down the windows, reach in and press the lock button (not really locked in if the window is open)
3.) You leave the key in the trunk and shut the trunk.

Wait! One can lock the doors from the inside with the key inside, but not with a door open. A parent recently did this, their child hit the power lock switch with the key inside and parent outside.

Another way to lock a key is when doors auto locks after unlocking it with a fob. I left windows opened unlocked a car via fob and left keys in the car. It locked after about 30 sec.

Yes, this is exactly what I am wanting it for. I assume a special machine would be needed due to the design of the actual key. Just have to find a place that can copy.

Many lock smiths now have the ability to cut a VW key but as was mentioned it won't start the car. Didn't you get a valet key? That would serve the same purpose.

Another thought... just buy a new remote without getting the key cut. Use the Vagcom to get the car to recognize it and use that to unlock the doors.

This may be more useful as well since the exterior looks are covered with key caps that you would have to pry off to use your spare key. But just for emergencies it wouldn't be too bad.

Some cars come with a plastic key to unlock the doors. You can get one made at a hardware store.

Yes we do have valet keys. Did not know it would open the door also.

The valet/plastic keys that came with the car do not work on the doors. They only work on the glove box and are designed to lock the glovebox after pressing the valet button so the valet can't get into the trunk or glovebox.

Has that changed with the new passat? In the past and with other cars, the valet key would unlock the doors and allow the valet to drive the car but not be able to unlock the glovebox or trunk.

I think so. In the Passat, the plastic 'valet' key is for the owner of the vehicle to keep after they lock the glove box and/or trunk pass through. The real key is given to the valet and cannot open the glove box trunk after its locked with the plastic key.

So it's possible the plastic ones open the door and possible they don't.

I can check to be sure but I am sure someone will do it before I will. ;)

Yes...

I just learned that recently.

In previous models, you would lock the secure areas with the master key and hand the mechanic or valet the valet key.

But in newer models that have kessy, you have to hand the mechanic or valet the main key (or they can't start the car), and lock the secure areas with the valet key.

And it is easier to make all models work the same way rather than Kessy equipped vehicles lock one way, and non Kessy equipped vehicles lock another way.
