My mechanic says I need a new rear axle due to rust. also need new dust shields, and probably calipers at this point. Seems like to best Idea is to just find a clean used rear axle out of a junked car.

Anybody know where to look for such an item?

car-part.com will show you where one is located in a wrecking yard. Otherwise, try the forum classifieds here and the regional section of vwvortex to see if somebody is parting one out near you. You can even post a 'wanted to buy' in those sections.

I would get new calipers. They seem to be a weak item on MkIV's. I get 5yr/150k out of mine, or at least that is my track record.

Seems like the axle is pretty beefy though. I'd be more concerned about the body if the axle truly is weakened from rust. Is one of the welds giving up or something?

As I understand it, I haven't taken a really close look though, the spring brackets are just about rusted through, and my mechanic doesn't think that there is enough metal to weld to. Also things are pretty crusty because of lack of dust shields.

Are all axles the same on this gen. jetta's or do the wagons have a different axle?
