Saw this while doing errands today:

That price gap is a little alarming.
That gap is likely to remain for a while, or even get worse. Refiners are desperately trying to produce more distillate fuels, primarily heating oil and ULSD. But they can't make diesel without making almost twice as many gallons of gasoline.

Now gasoline stocks are adequate and right now about where they should be in the 5-year band of gasoline stocks, only 4 million barrels behind last year. But diesel stocks are 32 million barrels behind last year and far below the 5-year range.

Folks have been warning and/or complaining about the supply chain problems. But it seems to me that because diesel is so important globally, this is a true crisis.

I know it probably doesn't have a big impact, but at least this is happening in the Spring as the heating season is ending. Heating with oil is pretty common in the Northeast and Midwest. Not sure about Europe.

I imagine the challenge is that delivery vehicles (trains, trucks, ships) that use versions of diesel don't have an alternative.

Last Monday (4/25) my local go-to station (Citgo) was at $4.99. Mid-week it was $5.35, ended the week at $5.50. Needed fuel Saturday, and ran across an Exxon in Albany that was at $4.99 (rest of stations were $.50 more).

This morning, the Citgo was at $6.49. Wonder what it will be in three weeks when I need to fill up again?

The West Coast is a long way from Rotterdam. East Coast supplies will be tapped first for export to Europe.
As I predicted last week, prices on the East Coast rose the most, the West Coast the least. It's all because of the sailing distance from Rotterdam.

RUG went to $4.29 and diesel went to $5.99 at the local Speedway.

Well it finally went up again on the prairies, $1.95/liter from Regina down through Swift Current, Sask.
Also had to fill up in southern Manitoba at $1.98/liter on Sunday.

6.14 for diesel at the reasonable station in Hadley MA today. Up a full dollar from a week or two ago. 4.99 at exactly one station in Somerville MA last weekend (closer to or more than 6 bucks elsewhere).

carefully not doing the math on what that adds up to including fuel additives… suddenly considering moderating my “aggressive” driving for the foreseeable future.

feeling like the job I’m starting in a week with a 115-140mi round trip commute may not be paying me enough *shrug*

I shudder to think of what the price must be at the service stations on the Mass pike right now

I filled the truck on Friday night on Hilton Head Island, SC for $5.25, minus a dime for the grocery points. Got home and noticed that it was $5.75 here in Charlotte. Dropped back to $5.39 on Sunday. I'm down half a tank so guess I need to fill up to stay under $100 per tank. The JSW is only down a quarter, so it can wait.

AAA says diesel prices here in Minnesota set a record Tuesday, but I have noticed a great many drops in prices around town. Last week some stations went to $5.49 and even $5.69, but they've fallen back to $5.29 at those same stations.

On the futures markets, heating oil prices fell sharply on Friday and Monday but were up Tuesday even though crude oil was down.

The EIA will report Wednesday on the stocks of crude oil, gasoline, and distillate fuels. I can't imagine diesel inventories going even lower, but that may have happened. The diesel supply condition is critical, everywhere.

I found premium diesel for $5 gal and d2 was $5.50. that was a bit odd
An obvious mistake. Somebody raised the price for the D2 but forgot about the other one. Soon to be corrected. At this time of year, the premium stuff should be about 7 or 8 cents/gallon higher.

Yeah. The same station. Lucky seven. I thought it was odd also. Added a bit of oil to the fuel to add some lube to the d1
The "premium" diesel is just D2 with extra additives for higher cetane and better lubricity. Most winter diesel is D2 winterized with additives rather than blending with D1 these days.

Other than the far north, there shouldn't be any winterized fuel left at the pumps. Might also be a reason for low inventories. They ran the winterized inventory down before the switchover to normal D2.

$5.099 at Hy-Vee in Osage beach Missouri. It's the cheapest around. Everywhere else is about 20 cents higher.
Regular unleaded is $3.99, 89 octane is 4.29 and 91 octane ethanol free is $4.59

Here's an interesting breakdown I did from the fuelly account with the Ram.
Here's my breakdown:
May 22 - $5.29 Jan 5 22 - $2.95
May 21 - $2.59
May 20 - $1.51 (cheapest I've paid for diesel since 2003)
May 19 - $2.59
May 18 - $2.31 Bought the truck in March of 18

This just prompted me to look back at my Wagon's fuelly. I started in 2009, but in the 2011/12 timeframe I see fuel prices in the $4/gallon range. With inflation not a lot different from today.

And there calling for a Diesel shortage this summer so even higher prices to come.
I wonder what it is on the truck routes toward Texas. It was quite high there early this year when I went down to Houston. Prices on goods will climb if that’s the case

Well we have finally topped the $2.00 mark here in southwest Sask, filled up yesterday, $2.089/liter. Luckily my fuel economy has been improving as well, last two tanks were 4.9 and 4.8L/100km, respectively. Which is a nice increase from my previous average of 5.2...

I fill up about every three weeks. Last time I paid $5 a gallon, but prevailing prices were $5.40ish. That was about two weeks ago.

This morning I saw $6.899 at a Sunoco in town. Yikes.
