Diesel is dropping in Minnesota, but gasoline is dropping faster. ULSD is still $2.499 or higher, now RUG has dropped below $2.40.

So the period of shrinking premiums for gasoline, then the diesel cheaper than gasoline, is coming to an end. From here on out, the spread will widen with gasoline dropping fast. It's because there are 100+ million barrels of winter-blend gasoline that's been in storage since last winter, and all if it can be sold, in most states, starting Sept 15th I think.

Hey,
Let's just enjoy the glut and the larger savings we're finally getting over RUG and all other gasoline products! I remember back in the day when gas was around a dollar, and diesel was .25 to 35 cents a gallon! Enjoy it while it lasts.

Sincerely,

The Sam's near my house selling for $2.28/gal just bumped up to match local stations, so now its at $2.52/gal. RUG is between $2.23 and $2.33 with a few hold outs at $2.59.

Annnnd a station down the street just dropped to $2.09/gal while most stations around it are $2.69 to $2.99. Time to go fill the car before the price jumps back up.

For roughly the last 7 or 8 years, distillate crack spreads have been higher than gasoline crack spreads. This means that refineries made most of their profits from diesel, heating oil, and jet fuel. But to produce more diesel, they also produced gasoline, which was already abundant. Refiners cranked out diesel to meet demand, and dumped the unwanted gasoline on the market at whatever price they could get. This led to wide spreads between diesel and gasoline at the pump.

But TWIP reports that this has reversed -- the crack spread for gasoline is unusually high, while the crack spread for distillates has held steady or even declined. This, combined with low crude prices, is driving the refiners to put the pedal to the metal -- the last three weeks have been the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th biggest weeks in history for crude processing in the US.

What does this mean? It means cheaper diesel compared to gasoline -- not just for a few months in the late spring and early summer. Oh sure, gasoline will still be relatively cheap in the fall and early winter; the seasonal patterns will still hold. But on an annual basis, gasoline prices are rising compared to diesel and other distillate fuels.

Just paid $2.95 here in Bay Area.
CA gets screwed probably more than any state in the US as far as gas prices go. I dated a gal who was a chemical engineer for chevron and we had a lot of conversations about why prices are the way they are. A big reason is that its nearly impossible to build a new refinery for political/environmental reasons. Plus, who wants to build more refineries when it would possibly lower the price of gas and reduce profits? And it does legitimately cost more to produce gas to be sold there due to certain laws, but not so costly that gas is as high as it is.

RUG price in So.Calif is drifting down from the $4.20 levels of a month or more ago. GasBuddy is reporting $3.55 in El Cajon with the Costco in Santee now at $3.25 for RUG. An amazing 30 cents a gallon difference for just a couple of miles. Last month the L.A. Times reported refiners margin on RUG was estimated to be $1.18 per gallon. With prices falling it looks like the retail stations are tryiing to hold on to some of that money.
While RUG was in the $4.20-4.30 range D2 held right at $2.99 Now D2 is down to a range from $2.62 - $2.85 Propel's new diesel substitute is selling for $2.59 about 20 cents below most Diesel stations. So Diesel is now about$.65 to $.95 per gallon below RUG in Southern Calif.
