I noticed, after a small drop in January, that diesel prices have started creeping up. IE: started at $3.79, small drop to $3.73, then back up to $3.89. There are a few cheap stations hiding around, but even those have started creeping up in price.

SilverGhost, I think it's still weather-related. Utilities in the Northeast have been forced to switch from natural gas to fuel oil, and this is pulling supplies from as far away as the Midwest and Midsouth.

If so many coal-fired power plants had not been shut down by the EPA, this probably would not be happening to the same extent.

Coal plants are being shut down by the competitive free wholesale market where natural gas fueled generation plants can produce electricity at a lower cost than coal fired plants. Blame the EPA for everything seems to be the wingnut explanation for free market effects.

That's the same Heritage Foundation that invented Romneycare, father of Obamacare.

Nowhere in there is there discussion of how the EPA rules permit natural gas fracking, which has undercut the price of coal. I suppose you support more stringent regulation of natural gas fracking so coal can compete?

The question was asked, why are diesel prices rising? I answered that it's because extreme cold weather has caused utilities to switch from natural gas to fuel oil. If so many coal-fired power plants had not been shut down, and of course if there were more nuclear plants, then there would not have been so much reliance on natural gas -- which is extremely plentiful, but the pipeline network is not adequate.

I think we can avoid a discussion of the Heritage Foundation, which BTW published one healthcare article in 1989 and it included a disclaimer stating that it was the opinion of the writer and did not represent the views of Heritage or any political party.

The EPA does not oversee the wholesale interstate bulk electricity markets. That is under the jurisdiction of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission "FERC". FERC, not EPA, decides if certain technologies, such as coal, should get special capacity payments to keep facilities on line that are otherwise unable to compete on a strict price basis. So blame FERC, not EPA.

No, you should stop litening/watching to MSNBC and CNN. As I said pages of links, adopt the American spirit of rugged individualism and look for yourself. Should I post the video of BHO2 saying that electricty rates should skyrocket?

Our buildings were required to switch to our alternate fuel anytime there is a cold duration. Just 1 of our buildings goes through 250 gallons of fuel oil a day.

April heating oil futures are down 13 cents/gallon just since the recent high on Monday. That's what happens when temperatures return to a normal range in the Northeast.

And in Minnesota, the rack price for ULSD is down 7 cents just since Tuesday -- again, due to the warming trend. Last Thursday the low temp was -13°F -- our high temp today is predicted to be +34°F. I think there's correlation, though you can challenge that if you want.

Northern Oakland County and Northern Macomb Conunty. In the last 7 days I have seen prices from $4.30 per gallon all the way up to $4.80. Now I am thinking I should have bought a gasser! These prices are approximately $1.00 per gallon higer than Gas.

Where do you typically buy? I find that lake Wylie is usually the cheapest in the Charlotte area and the QT there is showing $3.69 this morning. A shell up the road is still showing $3.59 but i don't think they turn the tanks enough.

Way down yonder in Baldwin County, Alabama, diesel has spiked this week. Last weekend I could still find it for as little as $3.539/gallon at Circle K and Sam's Club in Daphne. Today the cheapest I can find is $3.679 in Foley at Dodge's. One station is back up to $3.999. A Shell, naturally.

Gasoline has also headed north, jumping up an average of 10¢/gallon. It ranges from $3.139 at Jet-Pep in Summerdale to $3.399 at the Shell in Daphne with the $4/gal. diesel.

$3.99 diesel, gas is up to 3.55. I exspect diesel to climb.

I'm running RUG in my daily commuter now (Skyactive).

RUG is up around $3.20 or so per gal, and to make things fair the stations have raised diesel prices to $3.93 (a Conoco) to $4.20 to the C-store down the road from us. My wife tells me that it's because of heating oil prices, but if that's the case why haven't diesel prices gone way up before now? When gas dropped ~60¢ or so per gal, diesel was stuck at the same price it'd been since a year ago.
As with everything else I suppose that now that diesel is up that it'll stay up, but gas will fluctuate as usual.

Man this has been one crazy month for fuel prices around here.

Two weeks ago RUG was down to $3.29 and diesel up to $4.19, the largest gap I've seen yet… 90 cents.

I just drove by the same station today. RUG $3.79, diesel $3.99.

That, my friends, is the definition of fluctuation.
