I've been away from the TDI club forums for a while but still have a fondness
for diesel power. While board waiting for some surgery on my foot to heal
I was passing the time watching some YouTube things.. ( yah- I know )
One of them that I thought was interesting was this set of vids showing
a number of diesel engines in run away mode. I have heard of this, and
I understand how it could happen. Always wondered what I would do if
it happened on one of my machines. On my VW I wonder if the
anti-shudder valve would pull in and stay in long enough to stop it, or ??
One of the guys here in town had his Jetta TDI run away.. trashed the
engine. Dunno if he had a broken shudder valve or ??
Anyway, here is the first of the 2 vids I watched. (break out the popcorn!)

Yep, good few of them around, it just shows how useful a bit of knowledge can be, save doing that to your engine anyway.

So, aside from cutting off the air supply or fuel supply how does a person stop a runaway in a modern turbo diesel? Or how are the air and/or fuel supplies cut off? Will turning the ignition switch OFF stop a runaway in a CR TDI? Cutting off the air supply to a CR TDI could be difficult without something that could be shoved into air intake where it enters the air box.

On a runaway diesel, the engine is running off it's own engine oil basically. You have to choke off the air supply, or if you have a manual trans you can put on emergency brake, hit the brakes and put it into a high gear and slowly slip the clutch until you can get the car to die.

Thanks, makes sense that's where the "fuel" would be coming from. Sounds like I'd be up the creek in the proverbial leaky canoe with my DSG, or break the expensive transmission along with the expensive engine. That'd suck in a BIG way.
