Hi everyone,

the reason for this post is my suddenly non starting New Beetle with an ALH engine. I parked the car two days ago. Today i put on the ignition, waited for the glow plug light to go out and then nothing. The starter didn't do anything. I'm charging the battery right now. VCDS shows no fault codes. But the strange thing is, that i noticed a fast clicking noise from the injection pump. It is the same noise as in this post: https://forums.tdiclub.com/index.php?threads/injection-pump-electrical-noise.489397/post-5414335

The clicking noise stops when the glow plug light goes out. It is not the fuel solenoid valve which causes the noise.
I think there is something not right with the cars electronics.

Any clues what can causes this clicking noise?

Thank you.

Voltage readings are around 12.7volts, 11.8 when the glow plugs are heating. So i would rule out the battery.

I'm going to remove the battery tommorow and clen the contacts of the starter and inspect the wires.

But what could cause the rapid clicking noise if the IP(i think it is the timing advance solenoid). Could this also be caused by a bad connection somewhere?

The non starting problem is solved the cooper piece from the battery wire at the starter was broken. Got a replacement from the junkyard and it started fine.

The clicking noise is still there. Should i start a new thread about this issue?

Thanks everyone.

Nice! Might as well clean the grounds and inspect for any more corrosion, glad you got it started, the clicking issue seems fine to continue in this thread

Thats a common failure on those. Its easily replaced with a new brush holder. That and the front bushing and seal and the starter is good for another long time. You can. See my thread on rebuilding them.

The starter was fine, the cooper end from the battery wire snaped off, i only replaced this.

The problem with clicking advanced solenoid is solved. I had my SOI startup control map modified wrong, so that the solenoid starts acting at 0 rpm. After correcting this, there is silence from the pump.

Thanks everyone.
