The NCS is a far cry from a B5, and there are no NCS wagons. Besides, the list of CKRA fail points is pretty substantial, and seems to grow by the month. I trust my 240k mile BHW more than I'd trust a 120k mile CKRA.

If I could, I'd buy this car. I would probably be on offer for around $12k, though.
That's a good offer.
I have a line of people to call today who want to fly in / trailer it back and most are ok with the $14k so far.... i'll keep y'all updated.

That would be an excellent car for ekkoh99 !

I read an earlier post regarding the "black book" of car values. Here is the deal with that --- the "Black Book" is a compilation of used car values based on what vehicles have been selling at the Mannheim auto auctions around the country. It used to hold some merit (pre-Covid), but with the extreme shortage of new cars, used cars and off lease vehicles; you can pretty much toss the Mannheim "black book" into the trash can these days. Currently nobody can get new car or truck inventory based on the micro-processor shortages. Used car values are way up (over 50%-60%). A local dealer near me, who is one of the largest Dodge and Jeep dealers in the U.S., has a big lot with very few cars. He typically gets $7500 over retail window sticker for new Jeep Wranglers. Not many new Jeeps available to him these days and the demand is high. Most "used" cars going through the sales lanes at Mannheim are bringing absolutely insane used car money. Not uncommon for a clean used truck to bring 50%-70% over MMR (mannheim market report). That can sometimes equate to $10,000-$20,000 more than what the vehicle is really worth. The dealer still buys it from the auction and then marks it up another $3,000-4,000 for gross profit. My prediction is the new and used car markets will normalize in about 18-24 months ( when the new Intel micro-processor plants) come online in the United States. This means there will be quite a few Americans upside down in car loans when this market re-adjusts to normal. As far as insuring older cars; you can have it professionally appraised and it can be insured for the actual value. Hagerty insurance does this all the time. Lastly, I highly doubt any Mannheim auctions have a rare "barn find" car with these uber low miles being sold at auction. If I had more room in my garage; I would snap this car up in a heart beat.
🙏🥰

Anyone have thoughts on this car that's being offered for trade + cash to me for my passat?

Its a 2012 Jetta TDI 6spd that has had the emission mods done mid year 2019 (so almost out of extended warranty)

A guy wants to trade me one with a 110k + $4k -- bluebook on a '12 jetta tdi with that mileage is $10k-11.5k so that's like an offer of ~$15k assuming I sell it relatively quick.

Thoughts? i know very little about the 2.0 emissions issues and the cars overall.

Its yet another vehicle you will have to sell. More unknowns come with it.

I would keep your passat over that Jetta and fix the BSM.
jetta has a clean carfax. we'll serviced. figures it's be easier to sell at bluebook, as it's less 'special' than mine.

I wrote to oilhammer but it's cost me a minimum of probably $3.5k to get a bsm and tb and trailer it to him and back... soooo.... still think that's a good idea?

Eh, I'm in a different circumstance and would just delete instead of replacing the BSM, so costs would be lower.

Didnt you need a truck?

Why are you considering a trade for a Jetta? That won't work any better on those forest roads.

I'd consider it but it has the wrong tranny.

Yeah I would just sell this almost immediately for bluebook. Figure it'd sell quick and now I've essentially made $15k for my passat with no TB or BSM job. A bit more hassle but 🤷‍♂️

If you delete the balance shaft wouldn't you just be replacing engine mounts and other clamps and things because you're engine is going to rattle like powerstroke?

Yes and no.

The Balance shaft module deals with secondary imbalance, not primary.

What does this mean for a BHW without a balance shaft module? The lack of a BSM does not make the car more vibration prone at idle as one with think. Many of the vibration complaints from the engine / mount system in the BHW happen at idle. This can be exacerbated by cheap aftermarket axle shafts. Something your pristine car will not have or have to deal with for some time. I lived with my car as an automatic for a while, and found that the vibration at idle, in-gear was the most annoying (way more than secondary) but went away once moving, or could be ngated by shifting the transmission into neutral.

The secondary balance presents as a more high frequency "buzziness" right around 2000 rpm. A little lower or a little higher, and it goes away.

Note that based on a number of threads and comments, there seems to be a range of BHW engine vibration characteristics where the BSM was deleted. In my case the increased buzziness is there around 2000 RPM, but not very bad at all. It is less pronounced (or less detectable) in warmer weather when the rubber in the engine and transmission mounts softens slightly.

If I lived in warmer climes, I would absolutely just delete. Up here in the great white north, the -25 days are a little annoying until the engine warms up, but I can compensate by putting the engine in a gear that does not stay in that RPM range.

That said, I have lived with my BSM-less BHW for more than 300,000km and six years through six cold winters. I also have a geared BSM sitting on the shelf. IMHO the increase in the secondary vibration around the 2000 rpm mark is so minimal that I can't be bothered to install the BSM.

Good videos on the difference between primary and secondary imbalances:

There are just too many to list....
I am one of the few it would seem remaining BHW owners who actually bought the car brand new, so I know how they *should* feel, and that is why I like the balance shafts in place. Lots of people buying these second and third hand are now getting cars that perhaps are not in the best condition any more, have been chaxlefied, have a gajillion miles on them, have worn suspension components because the original struts are still in place, have had all the juice long since leaked out of their mounts, or any combination. So yeah, you may not notice much difference. I've gotten in cars that vibrated worse than my '79 Rabbit did at idle, literally anything inside the car that wasn't screwed down would buzz and rattle, and the owners had no idea.

A proper well cared for BHW won't vibrate or feel any different in drive at idle or taking off than an AWM B5 does.

But this is all mostly not relevant as parts seem to no longer be readily available, at least not here. I looked at the CBEA parts, and I think they would all work you'd just have to swap the oil pickup tube but I cannot be certain. There were a bunch of VAG engines (mostly in Audi branded stuff) that used a similar setup, so I have to think that there are parts somewhere on the planet that would work to ditch the chain drive.

And of course, the hex shaft is still present, chain or gears, and that is another fail point albeit much less frequent. Then the chain that just runs the oil pump directly isn't a "forever" thing either (I have a Golf in my driveway with its little chain chucked out the bottom that proves that :( )...

Thanks for all these details. After reading all this I feel even less concerned about doing a BSM job on my car anytime soon. The car *barely* vibrates more at idle and once it's fully warmed up it doesn't at all. Shifting to neutral or park completely eliminates it.

I think this thing is in about as 'new' of shape as one can be and reaffirms my idea that this very well may be the LAST pristine BHW in the country. I think a fresh timing belt service is prudent but if anything needs to happen to the balance shaft it can probably wait for the next belt change at ~120k

SOLD !!!!

Not a typo! Only 39,000 original miles.
Asking $14,000 — willing to negotiate for a quick sale! *I'm selling because I need a truck for new work and this was just my 'for-fun'car.*

Showroom condition - was always kept in a climate-controlled garage and used a few times a year by last owner. I am the second owner and just put it through it's paces, drove ~9k miles and had it serviced and deeply inspected by Hillside Imports in Oregon (TDI Specialist listed on this site) — No issues and paperwork to prove it. I'm doing a full timing belt job as well here in Denver where the car currently is. Delivery might be available. Trade for a 4x4 van or truck with bed cover.

New January 2022:
New Air filter
New Fuel Filter
Brand New VW Monster rubber floormats.
Brand new premium Nokian Encompass all weather tires (snowflake rated and very durable in winter AND summer - no need to change tires)
Brand new set of economy tires.

New March 2022:
Timing Belt
Water Pump
Tensioners
Pulleys
Serpentine Belt
Timing Belt
Premium oil and Mann filter + comes with oil for one more change.

Performed flawlessly on it's recent trip. I've been averaging 40-50mpg on the highway, 30-40mpg in the city.

Leathette heated seats, Tiptronic automatic transmission, Monsoon CD/Tape factory premium stereo sounds great. Moonroof.

Absolutely ZERO rust. Clean title and carfax, no accidents, no blemishes, nothing wrong.

Located in Denver. May be able to trailer it to you if you are not too far away. Or you can come and pick it up and drive it home.

Feel free to ask questions. Quickest response will be through the form on this site for the sale + more pics: https://passat-tdi-for-sale.myportfolio.com

Thanks for looking and sharing it around. Please be friendly in the comments.

NOTE on Balance Shaft:
I have not removed the balance shaft. I know people often like to do that as the factory one was not very stable. I've talked with some TDI specialist shops listed on TDIclub and they all don't do that work, VW dealers don't do the work, and the couple import shops around also wont do the work, and the ones I've talked to have said they don't see a reason to do it if you take good care of the car. So, I tried, but seems like many mechanics won't. The engine is purring and quiet and working great.
I have the same car purchased in Denver in 06, live on the Western Slope, had the balance shaft done as preventive maint at 179k by a mechanic in Norwood Co when my timing belt was due, he said it was hanging by a shoe string. Would definitely inform new owner of the issue so he/she can start saving up for it.
