So look quick and decide which one is the diesel nozzle.

Hint: It's not the green one. Took this photo last week on the auto side of a truck stop at Exit 10 on I-4 in Florida...I was pumping gas into a rental car and had to look twice.

That is tough to tell.

But you've got to push the button for the grade of fuel and if you hit the "ULSD" button and pick up the RUG handle, nothing will come out.

Look down, the nozzle that has the concrete stained under it

Up here they can be green, black or yellow. If I am unfamiliar with the station in question, I look at the fuel stream coming out of the nozzle right at the start of filling up, before any large quantity of fuel gets into the tank.

What color is a diesel nozzle supposed to be?

What color is a gasoline nozzle supposed to be?

Maybe it's a good thing there isn't a standard....it makes us double-check what it is that we're pumping.

We need to go back to the old-style pumps so you can see what yer gettin'.

Lesson:

1. NEVER look quick.
2. Always READ the label.

Honestly, it was very obvious which hose the proper fuel should come out of.

Be Alert, people! There will be a pocketbook quiz each time shortly after you refuel, it will be graded as a PASS/FAIL.

LOL

Precisely. I posted the photo as I recall a recent thread where somebody said Diesel always has a green handle...

As always, the one that says "Diesel". I follow that hose to handle, insert into filler. Never fails. :D;)

Pump handle color is irrelevant to me.

Hope it turns out to be a good movie.

ALWAYS and NEVER are most likely but may not be. I just topped off today and can't remember what color the nozzle cover was. I follow the hose because I once went to a pump with three grades of gas nozzles and a diesel nozzle right next to eachother and some smartass swapped them around. I was lucky or observant, or both.

Wow, I can' believe all the fuss out there over the colour of the handle. I never look at the colour. My car burns diesel so I put diesel in the tank! The colour of the handle is not important.

I just pull the nozzle up so that it's not fully inserted into the filler neck, and check the fuel stream colour/viscosity as it comes out.

There have been a couple of instances up here where the tanker has filled the wrong tank (gas in the diesel tank), so this checks for that as well.

I'm pretty sure that if you grab the wrong nozzle, no matter how many times you poke Diesel, it won't let you pump anything.

I usually fill up at a diesel only island. In CA, a green cover seems to be the standard but I don't know if its law. It should be. Gotta admit that when I'm away from home I always look for the green nozzle and might not have caught the mistake. It's amazing that there's no industry standard.

I just filled up today and studied the pump. Even if I grabbed the wrong nozzle I still had to push the diesel button so nothing would even come out of the incorrect nozzle in my hand (and the diesel nozzle was nasty and the gas nozzle was not, hard to mix them up). I don't see how anyone could pump the wrong fuel at my station.

There is a standard. Diesel comes out of the diesel nozzle. Gas comes out the gas nozzle. ;) Is that standard so tough to comprehend?

Maybe the club should have some temporary tattoos made up.

Diesel Only

You could put one on the back of the fueling hand of a new owner.
Then some would forget the temporary tattoo, and a permanent one might be in order. LOL

Or maybe a more robust HPFP is what is needed.

"Take time to smell the roses" might be better said as:

"Take time to smell the diesel"

Both actions can bring joy into life.

Guilty...

This has gotten me before. At a BP station. A few years back put 30 gallons of RUG into my dad's Super Duty. Luckily I caught it before starting it. $200 tow bill, $400 tank removal and cleaning and all was good. Expensive lesson, but not as bad as it could be. Now I make sure that I spend a good 10 seconds studying the pump and reading the label, tracing the hose. Time well spent.

Yes, it's easy to see the diesel nozzle is right next to the diesel button.

They do this switcheroo with nozzle colors in Europe and then you have to decide whether you want Bleifrei, Super Bleifrei or V-Power. In talking to mechanics in Switzerland people apparently screw up on this simple test all the time.

Taken in Wisconsin. Often the diesel pump nozzles seem to be yellow. I think it's often the case here in Michigan, too. I don't know for sure, because I pick up the one that says 'diesel'. :)
