The wifey bump my 2012 Golf TDI into a car before her. How that happened she wouldn't tell. Nothing happened to the other car but the golf's frontal bumper was pitched a hole.

How much it cost to fix it? Should I claim insurance or I just pay cash up front? Thanks.

I recently slid on concealed ice into a curb in the A6. Lateral impact snapped the left rear wheel off - control arms broke like a twig, wheel badly damaged. It's a 10 year old car...Insurance repair appraisal was $2400 utilizing refurbished parts. Actual cost of repair: $5,902. The point is, nothing on these cars are cheap to replace and even if the part is reasonably priced the labor can kill ya.
If it were my Golf - and my insurance policy had an "at-fault" or underinsured motorist deductible of $500 or less - I'd call them up and file a claim. Why? 1: Because that's what insurance is for. 2: Autobody repair at $50-100 per hour adds up very very quickly, especially when it involves paint. A reputable shop might happily bill your insurance company $1500+ for a new bumper install, which is a good deal for you. 3: It's nice to know the car is brand new spec. With a hole that large it will probably cost more in labor to patch up & paint than it will cost to file a claim. Plus you'll probably get a rental car while you wait :).
Sorry to see the 'ol girl with a bunk bumper man! Glad to hear nobody is injured.

In Massachusetts if you hit someone from the rear you're always at fault. However, I wonder if some states prohibit driving with a trailer receiver in place, which may make the other driver at fault.

It you repair this properly (new bumper cover, painted and installed) and assuming there's no damage underneath, I'm guessing repair will cost $1K or so. Rear bumper cover alone for my wagon a couple of years ago cost $600 after paint.

I drive with the hitch installed as I tow regularly. Very effective to prevent a driver who parks by feel. There are no laws I know of who prevent it.

The plate is not damaged just the hole beside it.

I would check local wrecking yards to see if there are any intact front bumper covers available. That’s a fairly popular color might be able to get a bumper cover and not have to do anything but install it.

Depends on what kind of damage is behind that. If there's any damage to your radiator or intercooler, just getting the bumper fixed would not be ideal.

Kind of a no brainer to check things out once the bumper cover is removed. However once you determine it is only cosmetic finding a bumper cover the same color would be the cheapest and easiest way to fix it.

Felt it needed to be said given neither the OP nor any responses eluded to the possibility there could more more than visible damage.

I doubt it caused any damage behind the bumper since wifey said the car did not hit a hitch but the corner of the car in front. I could be wrong, though.

I put a hole in my old Passat bumper cover like yours (backed into a fire hydrant). Any shop will charge around $1K to replace the cover and paint the new one.

There is a aftermarket parts place at I-45 and Rankin that specializes in Chinese replacement parts. I bought a bumper cover for the granddaughter's 98 Camry there for under $200 and it fit fine. A shop painted it for me for $300. I can look up that aftermarket parts place if you wish.

New Beetle, Jetta, one totaled Passat....RIP.
I got lucky. Skid into a friend's Suburban with trailer hitch in place. Got out and just knew i caved in the front end of my car. Not one sign of damage, not even a scratch. Lucky!

She certainly needs to be punished. I can suggest effective punishment methods if you need them.

Don't let the rest of us suffer because you gave your wife a pass. It just sucks that what smoking hot wimmens can get away with................

^^^ that is all it needs, a little sanding and paint...you can see the absorber in the picture, the only thing damaged was the bumper cover. We have many w$t-b$$ks here in Houston who do excellent body work, they are pros.. pick one of them or go to Archer, now as far as your wife, mine tore up her front bumper cover in 3 places (13 Nox), when I confronted her she just shrugged her shoulders with a big question mark on her face, so good luck in getting the truth, but I fixed mine...I left her

They don't have the bumper cover for now, but thanks mate!
Too bad, but yours can be patched. That's how the cover on my Passat was repaired. 3M sells a specific compound for repairing these ABS (acrylonitrile_butadiene_styrene) covers. Good luck.

Wow. Talk about a bad day. First she rear ends a car & then a truck with a ball hitch backs into her. :D
